Mulayam & Lalu Issue Outrageous Statements, Lutyen’s Intellectuals Ignore

Two senior leaders from the ‘secular’ camp recently made some shocking statements which in a normal country would have generated significant debate among thought leaders and brought those leaders in the firing line. But alas, the intellectual climate in Bharat is far from normal, and hence these statements created barely a flutter.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, the 76 year old supremo of the Samajwadi Party, said “There shouldn’t be legal cases against political leaders. If politicians are jailed then how will politics go on? When I was the Defence Minister, I made the Bofors files disappear.

This shocking statement, as reported here in Dainik Bhaskar was uttered by former Defence Minister (from 1996-98 in the United Front Government), former UP CM, and president of the Samajwadi Party, Mulayam Singh Yadav. He made these comments during his speech at the Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University’s Founding Day celebrations in Lucknow, on 17 August.

None of the mainstream media outlets or eminent intellectuals who fill newspaper op-eds with the same trite cliches day after day, asked the question that a new media outlet like SwarajyaMag asked in their article ‘Netaji’s Bofors Confession: Why Should Mulayam NOT Be Tried For Obstruction Of Justice?’ –

“The first question that should be asked here is—why should Mulayam Singh Yadav not be tried for obstruction of justice?

Secondly, if he said that politicians shouldn’t be tried in court, then surely we can assume that as Defence Minister he got to know that some politicians were indeed involved in the Bofors scam. Who were these leaders? And did Mulayam make their files disappear on their request or did he decide to do it by himself?

Far more importantly, how did he decide that these leaders shouldn’t face trial. The right to convict or acquit a person in India, or to call a person to trial, rests with the judiciary. Not with ministers.

Lastly, Mulayam’s behaviour, accompanied by his casual description of the fiasco is symbolic of the cynical approach towards politics that infects some voters and leaders alike.

Reader may be reminded that the Bofors scam broke in1987 and had rocked the then Rajiv Gandhi government. The allegation was that people within the Indian establishment had taken bribes in the process of purchasing 400 Bofors Howitzer guns. ‘Bofors’ was for many, the main agenda of the general elections of 1989.”

One wonders why our hyperactive higher-judiciary which now regularly intervenes in the executive domain by questioning budgetary allocations, monitoring implementation of schemes, questioning Army deployments & even the ‘necessity’ of festivals like Jallikattu did not see it fit to take suo-motu notice of this statement which clearly condones corruption & places politicians above the law. Why did the PIL NGO lobby not take interest in this matter? For that matter, why did BJP leaders not raise this issue?

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav, another favorite secular politician celebrated by the Lutyen’s chatterati for his ‘earthy humor’, told Bihar flood victims that they are lucky as not everybody gets Gangajal in his home.

213 people have died so far in Bihar due to floods this year, which has impacted 12 districts. Lalu met flood victims who were complaining of the government’s response and said: “Not everybody gets Gangajal in his home. You are lucky. Ganga will save everyone.”

While this comment did invite some flak, the outrage was nowhere near the levels seen for BJP UP State Vice-President Dayashankar’s remarks against Mayawati. Even BJP did not raise the deeply insensitive and atrocious remarks by Lalu in Parliament, while their opponents regularly create a ruckus in parliament for random remarks by anyone even remotely  connected to BJP/Sangh.

The message from our English media and establishment intellectuals like PB Mehta, Ramachandra Guha etc is clear – the likes of Sonia, Mulayam and Lalu can steal, lie and exploit the poor all they want…we will still back them against the ‘evil, fascists’ represented by Narendra Modi.

An ignorant middle class combined with an ideologically & morally corrupt media and intellectual class, allows such below average politicians like Lalu and Mulayama to sustain for so long. Every right thinking individual in Bharat should be afraid, very afraid of the direction we are headed.
