Attack by Muslim Neighbours Leaves Son Dead, Mother Injured in Kuppam, AP

Upendra (31) who was living with his mother Saraswathi (55) and paralysis-stricken father Rajagopal in Kuppam town of Andhra Pradesh, was fatally stabbed last Sunday night (Sept 3) by 8 members of a Muslim family living next to their house. Kupendra received 8 stab wounds and Saraswathi, who also had steaming hot water/food thrown on her, was injured on the neck and head. The son died on Tuesday in hospital, while his mother has been discharged.

There is a discrepancy in different media reports on the reason behind the attack, and some other details. While New Indian Express has quoted a police source that Upendra was stabbed as  he was in a relationship with a girl from the Muslim family, The Hindu claims that a petty argument caused the brutal attack on the mother-son duo. Moreover New Indian Express has mentioned 8 attackers and given the deceased’s name as Upendra (30), while The Hindu mentions 4 attackers and deceased’s name as Kupendra (31).

Here is what the New Indian Express report says

A 31-year-old man who was hacked two days ago at NTR colony in Kuppam of Chittoor district for being in a relationship with a girl from another faith breathed his last on Tuesday. His mother, who too was attacked, is still under treatment.Police have imposed IPC Section 144 in the region and are patrolling the streets to prevent reprisals. The victim, Upendra, was attacked by eight of the girl’s relatives identified as Ahmathulla, alias Basha, Hamanullah, 31, Rahamathullah, 28, Azad, 25, and four others.

Police said the eight barged into Upendra’s house on Sunday claiming that he had pushed stagnated water into their house. “It was only an excuse. They bore a grudge against him for his alleged affair with their sister,” the police said. The men then hacked Upenda and beat up his mother who was in the kitchen. They emptied the steaming hot contents of a vessel on her and ransacked the house before leaving. Residents of the colony tried to catch the assailants but they managed to escape.

Upendra and his mother were rushed to a local hospital where doctors told them that he was in a serious condition and may not survive. Upendra was then asked to be shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru.

On Tuesday, the Police Department rushed more personnel to the colony on receiving an alert on Upendra’s death. They did not permit bringing the victim’s body to the colony fearing it would escalate tension. Cops said Ahmathulla, Hamanullah, Rahamathullah and Azad were on the run but remaining four had been taken into custody.”

This is what The Hindu has reported –

“Tension was palpable in Kuppam town on Tuesday with the family members of a youth, who succumbed to stab wounds while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru in the early hours of the day, trying to attack the houses of the accused. Over 500 police personnel from Kuppam, Palamaner, Chittoor and Madanapalle were deployed at the tri-State junction, and S.V. Rajasekhar Babu, SP, rushed to the spot to supervise the situation.

Rajagopal, a BSNL employee, his wife Saraswathi (55) and their son Kupendra (30) are residents of the NTR Colony in Kuppam. A few months ago, a family of a minority community settled in the neighbourhood after allegedly being banished from the nearby Ragimamumitta by the village elders. Both the families are said to have been at loggerheads over petty issues.

Trouble started again on Sunday night as rainwater from Mr. Rajagopal’s terrace entered the premises of the other family leading to yet another verbal duel. At around midnight, Rahamatullah, Amanullah, Ahmatullah, and Azad, all brothers, allegedly barged into the house of Mr. Rajagopal and attacked Ms. Saraswathi and Mr. Kupendra with kitchen knives.

While the youth received eight stab wounds, his mother was injured on the neck and head. They were rushed to the PES Medical College Hospital in Kuppam. Later, Mr. Kupendra was shifted to a corporate hospital in Bengaluru. He, however, died on Tuesday. Ms. Saraswathi was discharged from the Kuppam hospital.

Kupendra’s marriage was to be performed on September 28. Mr. Rajagopal, who suffers from paralysis, fell sick soon after the attack.

Two surrender

Among the four accused, the eldest works as a taxi driver. He recently acted as a villain in a Tamil film that was shot in Kuppam.

As new about the youth’s death spread, tension prevailed in the colony as the relatives of the youth from Chittoor district and neighbouring Tamil Nadu rushed to Kuppam in large numbers. Fearing attack, two of the accused surrendered before the police. The other two were nabbed while trying to board a train at the railway station at around noon. With the relatives of Mr. Rajagopal getting ready to attack the houses of the accused, the Kuppam police deployed additional forces to bring the situation under control.

Rasta roko

Meanwhile, the relatives of the youth staged a rasta roko on the busy Kuppam-Krishnagiri inter-State highway, leading to disruption in traffic up to 10 km on both sides towards Palamaner and Tamil Nadu. They relented only after the police assured them of justice.”

Its been a week since this gruesome crime occurred and the news has sunk without a trace. Where are the left-liberal defenders of inter-faith marriages, of communal harmony and so-called ganga-jamuna tehzeeb? Why aren’t they out beseeching Muslim society to look within, and live in peace & harmony with their Hindu neighbours? Where are the #NotInMyName protesters? In Junaid Khan’s case there are credible reports that Khan’s relatives had pulled the knife which prime accused Naresh snatched in self-defense, whereas in this case Upendra and his aged mother were attacked inside their own home…isn’t this a more horrifying crime?

We request our readers to share more details of this case, as hopefully Telugu media would have probed the matter in greater depth. Delhi media has far more ‘important’ business like analyzing the behavior of the social media handles followed by the PM; we cannot expect them to spare any time over the tragedy that has befallen a Hindu family.
