JNU Sedition Video is Authentic, Say 2 Leading Forensic Labs

The video footage of the 9 Feb event at JNU where anti-Bharat slogans such as ‘Bharat ki barbaadi tak jung chalegi’ (war will continue till Bharat is destroyed) were raised has been found to be genuine by 2 leading forensic laboratories – CBI forensic lab in New Delhi & Gandhinagar-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).

As per Delhi police sources, the raw footage of the event, obtained from a Hindi news channel, was sent to the CBI forensic lab in New Delhi for examination along with camera, memory card, a CD containing the clip, wires and other equipment, as reported here.

“The CBI lab sent a report to Delhi Police’s Special Cell on June 8 saying the raw footage was authentic,” the police source said.  Earlier, Delhi Police had sent four video clips of the event to Gandhinagar-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) which in its report, in May, had said that they were genuine.

On 9 Feb, a ‘Cultural Evening’ was called by leftist students at JNU to commemorate the “judicial killing” of Kashmiri terrorists Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat, and against the “Brahmanical collective conscience”. Below is a video of the sloganeering that followed –

An FIR was registered into the matter on the basis of the raw video footage, which said that a group of students, led by JNU student Umar Khalid, could be seen raising anti-Bharat slogans, 21 of whom were mentioned in an interim report filed a few days later into the case. Kanhaiya, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested in February and later granted bail in the case, which is now being probed by Delhi Police’s anti-terrorism unit Special Cell.

JNU’s internal committee fines/rusticates the accused students

According to this report from April 26, 2016 –

“The High-Level Enquiry Committee set up by the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration, to probe the incidents of February 9, 2016 that led to three students being charged with sedition, came out with its decisions yesterday.

JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, who was in judicial custody for over 22 days, has been fined Rs 10,000. Both Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya have been rusticated for one semester. Khalid has also been mandated to pay a fine of Rs 20,000. Bhattacharya has been declared “out of bounds” for five years with effect from July 23.

One more student (Mujeeb Gattoo) has been rusticated, two have been ordered to be removed from the hostel, financial penalties have been levied against 14, and two ex-students have been declared out of bounds of the campus. One of these ex-students is Dhrupadi Ghosh, a researcher at Jamia Milia Islamia. Among the students who have been fined are JNUSU general secretary Rama Naga, former vice-president Anant Narayan, former general secretary Chintu Kumari and student representatives Aishwarya Adhikari and Gargi Adhikari.”

Politicking and Grandstanding over the JNU sedition case

The 9 Feb event at JNU and the subsequent police action provided fertile ground for the left-liberal ecosystem to indulge in some serious politicking and grandstanding. ‘Rise of fascism on college campuses’, ‘RSS Ideology being imposed’, ‘No space for dissent’, ‘Freedom of expression being throttled’, ‘Totalitarian state’ etc were the lines used by the usual suspects.

Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, JDU’s Nitish Kumar, AAP’ Kejriwal, CPM’s Yechury – every politician from the ‘Secularist’ camp made heroes out of the JNU students, especially Kanhaiya Kumar hailed as the new knight in shining armour who would resuce Bharat from the imminent RSS-Hindutva-Modi dictatorship! Media too played its part, breathlessly reporting every little detail about l’affaire JNU & Kanhaiya – his family roots, rise in student politics, his speeches etc.

And how could the Marxist historians & academics be left behind? Romila Thapar, Irfan Habib and Nayantara Sehgal praised the ‘bravery’ of Kanhaiya & gang, which they hoped would ‘inspire’ other students; while professors like Jayati Ghosh and  Nivedita Menon either spun nutty conspiracy theories about masked IB men being behind the protests to defame JNU, or claimed that the terrorist insurgency in Kashmir was justified.

Page 3 commentators like Shobha De and the Bollywood crowd also picked up on the trending issue and weighed in with their soundbytes. The JNU issue had become the perfect media storm.

Hyderabad based Truth Labs found 2 out of 7 video clips to be ‘doctored’

Wading into the issue, the AAP Government ordered a magesterial inquiry into the JNU incident, and sent 7 video clips for analysis to Hyderabad-based Truth Labs. The forensic report of Truth Labs claimed that 2 out of 7 video clips were doctored, setting the the ground for a political battle. But as this article shows, the veracity of Truth Labs itself is under a cloud. The key questions around this private forensic lab are –

  • Why was a private lab chosen for forensic examination despite the fact it’s not approved by NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories), and its reports won’t stand judicial scrutiny?
  • Does Truth Labs have adequate competence, expertise, tools and logistics to probe such audio-video cases? There are many Central and State Government forensics laboratories having better facilities and expertise and competence to give reports under Sec 293 Crpc.
  • What are the political leanings of those running Truth Labs?
    • Are reports about Truth Labs Chairman Dr. KPC Gandhi being appointed as advisor to Delhi government true?
    • The Lab was set up under the guidance of Dr. Chandrashekhar, former Director of FSL Chennai. He had written a book First Human Bomb on Rajiv Gandhi’s assasination, which was launched by Sonia Gandhi, due to her proximity with Dr. Chandrashekhar.
    • This private lab’s New Delhi regional office was inaugurated in 2009 by the then Home Minister P. Chidambaram at India Islamic Cultural Center, New Delhi.

Now that the raw video footage has been unequivocally proven to be genuine, it is important for police to follow through and reveal the truth behind the 2 ‘doctored’ clips as per Truth Labs as well – such shady establishments and their political masters should be dealt with ruthlessly and not allowed to play their dirty games in future. And the JNU students, currently out on bail, culpable for the shameful event should also be dealt with as per the law of the land.
