Hindus attacked, forced to flee from Ghaziabad’s Arthala

Hindus in Muslim majority areas are faced with an existential crisis and are forced to flee from such places. In mid-May, Sanjay Colony in Arthala located in Ghaziabad’s Sahibabad was attacked by a mob of Muslims including Councillor Dilshad Malik.

As per reports, trouble started when Sanjay Colony resident Sunder Yadav asked a Mohammedan youth who had been standing at the park opposite the colony and passing lewd comments on Hindu women and girls to leave the place. The youth then returned with a mob of people and attacked houses of Hindus to seek revenge. Malik was also involved in the rioting and attack on Hindus.

The mob that was armed with rods and sticks began abusing the family members and then attacked them. The mob even resorted to stone-pelting. Local Hindus said that the electric supply to the colony was purposely cut off on the instructions of Malik before the attack. Additionally, houses of Hindus were bolted from outside so that they couldn’t come to the rescue of victims. Although Amar Ujala says that 34 people were involved in the attack, local Hindus have alleged that the number of attacks was close to 200.

The attackers brutally assaulted Hindus irrespective of their age and gender. They even tried to force themselves on the women. Many Hindus have been badly injured in the attack. The mob also looted the women’s jewelry. Men and women were harboring wounds that have scarred them for a lifetime. Hindus are leaving in constant fear and many are of the opinion that they may have to flee the place if they aren’t giving justice.

Hindus have said that the attacks were started by the other side merely because they asked one of them not to use abusive language against Hindu women and also not tease them. Many victims said that the attacks were planned and hence power supply to the colony was cut off before the attacks began.

Police on their part have said that cases have been registered against 14 persons including councilor Malik and additionally 20 unnamed persons have also been booked in relation to the attack. Cases have been registered under various sections including those related to creating nuisance, assault, and threatening to kill among others. Police said that six persons have been taken into custody in this case so far.

In what can be called the Kairana model, Hindus are being forced to flee once the Muslim population reaches a majority. Hindus said that they now live in fear with many families considering selling off their houses. Many victims said that they have put up boards stating their houses are up for sale because they fear for the safety and security of their children in general and girls in particular.

Yadav, who lodged the complaint, said that the Hindus of the area always minded their own business and have been neutral in their approach despite which they were attacked. It is also a matter of grave concern that such incidents are happening closer to the country’s capital. All that the victims want is justice but a larger question that Hindus across the country should ask is how much is too much?
