Inspector suffers head injuries after mob attack in Kamal Nath’s pocket borough: Chhindwara, MP

Inspector Preeti Mishra, of Tamia police station, suffered head injuries after being hit with sticks by a gang who had assembled for a wedding, disregarding the Corona lockdown. Police received information that more than 200 guests were assembled at a marriage function and had gone to investigate. Enraged, the goons attacked the officials and the police that accompanied them. They used sticks and allegedly indulged in stone-throwing.

Other than Inspector Preeti, several policemen, the Tamia Tehsildar Manoj Chaurasia, and his driver were all injured in the violence. The hooligans didn’t spare government vehicles and many were damaged. Earlier, the local administration had granted permission for 25 people to attend the ceremony. Video footage clearly suggested that the cap on 25 was not adhered to.

Incidentally, Chhindwara is the assembly constituency of senior Congress leader, Kamal Nath. The incident occurred at Sajkuhi under Tamia police station. Preeti Mishra asked them to stop the wedding festivities reminding them about the existing Covid situation. The mob encircled the police force and attacked them with sticks. Preeti was administered first aid at a nearby hopsital and was shifted to Chhindwara for additional treatment.

Upon receiving information, Vivek Agarwal the Superintendent of Police (SP) left for the spot with a contingent to quell the violence. The incident happened on the night of 11 May. Police in riot gear were seen rounding up the rowdy elements. The very next day the SP confirmed that 12 out of the 14 who were identified by the police have been arrested so far. He promised that the rest would be nabbed soon.

While we applaud the prompt action against miscreants in this case, it is a grim reminder of the anti-Hindu double standards of our secular state that the same police becomes hamstrung when attacked by  so-called minorities or vested interests. A gang of anti-nationals went on the rampage during the Tractor Rally on Republic Day in the national capital and 400 cops were injured, but most of the key instigators are walking free or out on bail. The country witnessed innumerable mob attacks and abuse directed towards police and health workers in Muslim localities, like this incident from Indore, during Coronavirus lockdowns and testing drives, but was any meaningful action taken?
