West Bengal: Land Jihadis target poor Dalit Hindus in Metiaburz, Kolkata

The lives of Dalit Hindu families who are living in the slums of Muslim-dominated Metiaburz also known as “mini-Pakistan” in Kolkata, West Bengal are under constant threat. The Dalit families of that area are under immense pressure to leave their homes so that the land mafia can grab their land. A person named Muhammad Sheikh Mumtaz is accused of removing Hindus from their area with the help of his gang. Women, children and aged persons have also not been spared.

Suraj Kumar Singh, a local activist told OpIndia that Muhammad Sheikh Mumtaz has been wanting to evacuate the ‘Bari’ (group of a few houses in a slum) for several days. He said that the situation worsened on Sunday (February 28, 2021) when the son of Muhammad Sheikh Mumtaz, along with many of his comrades and goons, came and threatened the Hindus of the area.

He said that the only fault of these Dalit Hindu Bengali families is that they live in Bengal. Hindus are a minority in Metiabruz. He said that it has now become difficult for Hindus to live with their identity in the area. Sheikh Mumtaz has come to be known as a a promoter by profession and owns a private company and he claims that he has ‘bought’ this land about 6 years ago. Singh filed a case which is still under consideration.

The 6 Hindu Dalit families are living on that particular land since the time of their ancestors. They also have the necessary papers and rent receipts for that land.

Inspite of all this, Mumtaz along with his goons attacked them. The poor Dalit Hindu families are also getting threat calls. Police remained silent and did not give any assistance even after the latest incident. It is very clear that the accused are very influential. On Sunday, Muhammed Sheikh Mumtaz and his comrades threatened the Hindu families including elderly, women, children and also brutally attacked and abused them. Injured Hindus had to be taken to the hospital. The minority Hindus are feeling very insecure and they have the fear of losing their land. Moreover, Muhammad Sheikh Mumtaz and his goons are also accused of throwing pieces of beef in the nearby temple which shocked the minority Hindus.

Even after so many dreadful incidents, administration kept mum and the survival of the minority Dalit Hindus of the area is at stake. The plethora of so-called protectors of Dalit rights like Bhim Army, Dalit Panthers, Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, BAMCEF, Ambedkar’s Caravan, BAPSA etc are also absent when such real issues of brutal persecution of Dalits at hands of Islamists come up. The truth is that most of these organisations are in cahoots with Islamists to peddle their politics of oppression.

Cases of “Land Jihad ” are a burning issue in West Bengal nowadays as intruders from Bangladesh and  Myanmar are continuously entering the state illegally while poor Hindus of all communities are being forced to live as second-class citizens in their own homeland.
