Bharat has probably for the very first time called out the UN (United Nations) for being selective in its resolutions and missing out to take a stand for Dharmic religions including Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist Dharmas. Bharat’s First Secretary to the UN Shri Ashish Sharma raised several questions regarding the selectivity of the UN in keeping out Indic faiths from its resolutions and stated that so far the resolutions had always focussed only on Abrahamic religions.

Sharma pointed out that UN resolutions always focused on antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Christian acts but never mentioned the persecution of followers of the Indic faiths including Hindu Dharma, Buddhism, and Sikhism. Wion News quoted Sharma as saying “We fully agree that anti-Semitism, Islamaphobia, and anti-Christian acts need to be condemned and India firmly condemns such acts. However, UN resolutions on such important issues speak only of these three Abrahamic religions together. This august body fails to acknowledge the rise of hatred and violence against Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism also…but the current Member States refuse to speak of these religions in the same breath as the first three “Abrahamic” religions”.

Among several other things, Bharat brought to the notice of the members the persecution suffered by followers of Dharmic religions such as the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha by fundamentalists and attack on a Gurudwara in which 25 Sikhs lost their lives in Afghanistan as well as several attacks on Hindus and Sikhs in many South Asian nations.

Stating that the culture of peace cannot be only for Abrahamic religions, Sharma asked for the inclusion of attacks o Dharmic faiths to the list of three Abrahamic religions when such resolutions are passed. The UN passes the culture of peace resolution every year calling for the promotion of peace, non-violence, etc.

Bharat pointed out the fact that despite Hindu Dharma having more than 1.2 billion, Buddhism more than 535 million and Sikhism around 30 million followers world-wide, UN resolutions hardly every spoke about the persecution faced by these communities.

Bharat also brought forth how Pakistan had arbitrarily transferred the management of the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara into the hands of an entirely non-Sikh body from that of the Sikh community body which goes against the tenets of the Sikh religion.

First Secretary Ashish Sharma added till when will we be “mute witness to Pakistan driving away their minorities by threat, coercion, conversion and killing.

This is the first time Bharat has spoken out with such clarity regarding the persecution faced by Dharmic faiths at an international forum. This is a refreshing change from the usual minority appeasement.
