Christian Revival Church grabs government land and usurps tribal rights in Tawang

Dalit Positive has brought to light encroachment of government land by Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Tawang where it has raised an illegal structure thereby usurping the rights of local tribals and hurt their religious sentiments.

Dalit Positive is a nationalist organization that fights for the rights of backward castes and Dalits who have taken up such cases throughout the country. In their complaint to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP), the organization has highlighted the illegal nature of the building constructed by CRC. They have also pointed out that indigenous tribes stand to lose out on their rights as a result of this action.

This act of CRC also threatens the beliefs of tribals of the area and the intervention of the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry is also being sought in this regard. The violation is not just limited to the rights of the tribals but poses threat to both their lifestyle as well as social and religious practices.

The Christian Revival Church is a movement that came into existence in Nagaland in January 1962 so as to “fulfill the promises of the holy scriptures and according to the will of the Lord Jesus Christ to be separated from the Paganism for the Greater Harvest of Souls” says their website.

In keeping with their objective, they have been attacking indigenous faiths which according to them are Pagan and ‘harvesting souls’. The movement which began in Nagaland has spread to other North-Eastern states and is now threatening the tribal beliefs.

This is what their website reiterates in the “Church formation” section which reads “The Nagaland Christian Revival Church was formed intrinsically based on the Biblical Foundation under the power of God with mighty Revival Tide of the Holy Spirit and now rapidly growing on the Foundation of the word of the unshakable Truth. That the God of heavens and the Lord of the Harvest is mightily using this Christian Revival Church Multiplicatively in Asian Regions as it is not by might nor power but by My Spirit says the Lord of Hosts (Zec. 4:6). ” This church was drastically separated from the paganism for the greater harvest of souls”.

No wonder with such an explicit hatred against indigenous faith, missionary attacks on Hindu dharma and other local Dharmic and allied tribal traditions has seen a sharp rise in recent times.

This attack on the faith of indigenous people by Christian evangelists is one in a long list of such attacks in recent times, particularly in North-Eastern Bharat which Hindupost has been highlighting from time to time.

Recently, radical Christians had destroyed a Kali Temple in Merenggapara in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya after a similar incident was reported last year from Kongthong in East Khasi Hills district where a Niam Khasi sanctum sanctorum was vandalized and desecrated by Christians who interrupted an annual ritual by practitioners of the Khasi tribal religion while police and a local magistrate stood by mutely.

This is not the first instance when evangelical missionaries, radical Christians, or Islamists have attacked Hindu temples across the country. Several desecration incidents or attacks on Hindu religious leaders have been reported from North East. There have been reports of Hindu temples being ransacked in Manipur’s Senapati district where the Christians form the majority (89%) while the Hindu population is merely 9%. In 2000, terrorists belonging to the Christian extremist terror outfit National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) broke into a temple and shot dead a popular tribal Hindu preacher known as Shanti Kali.

Fundamentalist adherents of Abrahamic faiths like Christianity and Islam have time and again indulged in vandalizing and desecrating murtis of Hindu Devis and Devatas. Extremists of both faiths consider Hindus as “devil worshippers” who need to be ‘rescued’ from sin and hellfire by bringing them to the path of the “one true God”.
