UP police registers case against five people for luring people into adopting Christianity in Shahjahanpur

Five men were booked by the UP (Uttar Pradesh) police under various sections of the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance for luring people into adopting Christianity in UP’s Shahjahanpur reports The Times of India (TOI).

An FIR was lodged by locals who intercepted a prayer meeting at the house of one of the accused in Kanshiram Colony in Shahjahanpur city – a victim issued a statement saying that he was lured to adopt Christianity with nearly 15 other people who were promised jobs and houses if they became Christians. A musical keyboard, portable sound system, and a Bible were recovered from the house.

The police said that two of the accused belong to Tamil Nadu, but are currently residing in Shahjahanpur.

Meanwhile, a probe has been ordered into the issue by Shahjahanpur senior superintendent of police S Anand. The police said that although an FIR has been registered under the new law they have not yet arrested the accused because they seem to be ‘lacking the capacity’ to fulfil their promises.

UP’s new anti-conversion law,  states that no person shall convert, either directly or indirectly from one religion to another by use or practice of misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means or by marriage nor shall any person abet, convince or conspire such conversion.

A week back, 3 men were similarly arrested from Azamgarh district after a villager complained they were organizing meetings to influence people to convert to Christianity.
