Ganesh murti desecrated with alleged human waste in Andhra Pradesh

In yet another attack on Hindus in Andhra Pradesh, the vigraha of Bhagwan Ganesh has allegedly been desecrated by applying human excreta to the sacred murti.

As per available information, the incident occurred in Rajahmundry and the culprits are yet to be identified. The motive behind the desecration seems to be creating unrest and hurting the sentiments of the majority Hindus who have been at the receiving end ever since Christian CM Jagan Mohan Reddy has come to power.

The incident reminds one of the Rakshasas mentioned in our itihasas, who reveled in desecrating yajnas by the rishis. Later on, the mantle was taken up by Islamic invaders, who showed their hatred towards Hinduism by targeting temples. They not only broke temples, but also desecrated them by defecating there, slaughtering cows in the temples and also by using the murtis as footsteps of mosques.

The Christians were no less barbaric. During the Goan inquisition started on the request of “Saint” Francis Xavier, King of Portugal issued an order in 1546, to forbid Hinduism, destroy Hindu temples, prohibit the public celebration of Hindu feasts, expel Hindu priests and severely punish those who create any Hindu images in all Portuguese possessions in Bharat. However, the actual inquisition started 14 years later and as a result all Hindu temples of Goa were demolished!

These crimes now being reported from Andhra depict the same hate towards Hindus and Hindu religious symbols. Speaking on the incident, Journalist Sai has pointed out how time and again Hindu temples are being targeted in Andhra Pradesh. The attacks on Hindu temples have become all too frequent to be dismissed as a one-off act by miscreants or hooligans.

In the past, vigrahas have been smashed, temple chariots used in rath-yatras (chariot processions) been burnt, or temples desecrated by placing meat; this time, however, the hooligans have gone too far and serious action needs to be initiated if such acts are to be stopped. Hindu tolerance is now truly being misconstrued as weakness which is allowing hooligans to act in such a vile manner.

Even Jana Sena Chief and Telugu film actor Pawan Kalyan had raised questions in this regard and asked the government to take measures to ensure the safety and security of Hindu temples while adding that lame excuses such as “it was an act conducted by mentally unstable persons” or “honey hunters set fire to the chariot accidentally” are not acceptable anymore.

It is the need of the hour not just to install CCTVs in temples but also to step up protection of Hindu temples in Andhra keeping in mind the frequency of such attacks.

A thorough police investigation needs to be done to determine if it is really human waste and also ascertain who could be behind such a disgusting act. Also, the culprits must be brought to book at the earliest with exemplary punishment being meted out.
