Jharkhand police arrested a woman and detained two nuns of Missionaries of Charity, a trust founded by Nobel laureate Mother Teresa, for allegedly selling the infants born to unwed mothers at the institution, Times of India has reported –

“Kotwali police station officer in-charge Shyamanand Madal said on Wednesday, “An FIR was lodged under Section 370 of IPC (exploitation) and three people were detained for questioning. One woman has now been placed under arrest and we have strong evidence against a nun in detention and she too could be arrested soon.”

The FIR was lodged after Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Ranchi went on a regular inspection around a week ago and found that a child had gone missing from the institution.

CWC member Pratima Tiwari said, “Missionaries of Charity’s Jail Road chapter gives shelter to unwed mothers who have no place to give birth to their babies. In one of our inspection trips to the institution, a week ago, we found that one male newborn was missing.”

When the CWC members questioned one of the nuns, she told them that the mother has taken him away. “We contacted the mother and she told us that she does not have the child. We followed this up with institution again. The sisters then called the UP-based family to whom they had sold the child for Rs 1.2 lakh,” Tiwari said. On Tuesday, the family approached CWC and told them that the organisation took the money from them as ‘hospital fees’.

Sources said Anima Indwar, a worker at the organisation who has been arrested, confessed that children were being sold to various families and has given a written list of five such babies.

Social activist Baidnath Kumar said Missionaries of Charity stopped adoptions from their organization across India in October 2015, but their Ranchi-based wing continued to give away children. “If you visit the place, you can find one or two women at the gate enquiring about their children who were born there, but were not handed over to them. I got this information in 2016 and had informed the special branch back then. The organization has one wing in every district and each one of them should be investigated,” he said.

TOI tried to contact Missionaries of Charity’s Jail Road branch till late in the evening but got no response. On getting in touch with the organization’s Hinoo Road chapter, a nun who preferred not to be named, said they had no clue about what was happening at their other centre.”

Child trafficking & child sexual abuse is a serious problem in Chrisitan missionary-linked orphanages and children’s homes – this is an open secret that most people active in the social sphere know, but are hesitant to vocalize due to fear of being labeled ‘anti-minority bigots’.

Here are some other cases which have come to light recently that show the bread & depth of this problem –

1.) April 2018 – Jonathan Robinson, a 76-year-old vicar of the Church of England, was convicted for for sexually abusing a 15 year old boy under his care in the ‘Grail Trust’ children’s home in Valliyoor, Tirunelveli founded and funded from UK.

2.) Nov 2017 – Pastor Gideon Jacob (62), the founder of Mose Ministries children’s home in Tiruchy funded by Germany-based Christian Initiative for India, was arrested by CBI for trafficking girl children. Around 100 girls, most of them illegally transferred to the home, were being emotionally abused, isolated, taken to Germany and Poland to perform roadshows, street plays and prayers both in public places and churches to beg for funds, and very likely sexually exploited as well.

3.) Aug 2016 – Christian pastor, M James, was arrested yesterday for duping minor children and forcing them into begging at traffic signals in the IT Corridor in Hyderabad, on the pretext of providing education to them at his ‘orphanage’ Bhrama Puthra Social Service Society.

And quoting from this India Happenings blog – “Many of the inmates were not technically orphans, but were probably being held in the “Children’s Home” to extract money from Evangelicals and Bleeding Heart Liberals  abroad. Such “orphanages” also help in raising new troops of foot soldiers (so called native pastors) for purposes of “reaching” and “saving” millions of Indian souls in the coming decades.”

There are other variants of this human trafficking racket – as outlined by Rajiv Malhotra, the missionary-NGO nexus works in places like Jharkhand to place tribal girls as domestic helps in metro cities once the family agrees to convert & abandon their ancestral faith.

This template of exploitation of poor children by missionary organisations is not unique to Bharat – it has been followed with Aborigines of Australia, Native Americans in North & South Americas, and continues to this day in strife-torn countries like Haiti.
