Local Muslims threaten Purohit in West Bengal’s Nadia

Amidst the background of Muslim aggression against Hindus in Bengal being frequently reported comes the news of local Muslims threatening a Purohit.

Local Muslims have threatened to incite violence against Harinam chanting at an Ashram in Nadia which had caused widespread anger among the local Hindu community. This Ashram is locally known as Samarpan Ashram located in Kubernagar Village, Nakashipara, Nadia. Gita recitation and Harinam chanting of this Ashram has been going on for almost twenty years. The local Hindu community considers this Ashram socially and religiously important place.

Recently, local Muslims in the vicinity of the Ashram complained that the recitation of Gita and chanting of Harinam at the Ashram was troubling them. They also threatened to close the Ashram. Anil Roy, Chief Purohit was abused for continuing chanting of Harinam and Gita. Anil Roy said that he was regularly getting threat calls to stop chanting Harinam and Gita immediately, during Namaz or the Ashram will be closed. They would also attack the Ashram if the situation continued and Hindus refused to accede to the demands of the Muslims.

Presently, the local Hindu community is both angry and shocked. Their fear is that if the administration does not co-operate, the Ashram’s Harinam chanting and Gita recitation will have to be stopped. The way the local Muslims are carrying out violence and threats there is no other option but to close their Ashram.

The only question in the minds of local Hindus is whether they have any religious freedom at all. The local Hindus are currently living in extreme panic and tension. This fear isn’t unreasonable considering the fact that Hindus are constantly being attacked across the country in Muslim-dominated areas.

Readers may recall a report that had indicated how throughout Bharat Hindus are suffering violence and mob-lynching in Muslim-dominated areas. Hindupost had listed out some of the incidents that gave credence to the report:

Recently in West Bengal, Hindus were attacked for three days continuously at Telni Pada village in Bhadraser tehsil of Hooghly district. Despite there being a medical emergency during COVID-19 lockdown, their houses were burnt, women were targeted and they were also beaten up. The police did not act.

In the Harishchandra block of Malda, there was looting in the Hindu settlement and attempts were made to damage the temple. In a village near Basirhat, women were beaten up by the police itself. Police and law & order machinery were also attacked in Howrah by the Muslim mob. In Murshidabad district, Hindu areas have been repeatedly targeted.

These aren’t isolated instances and Hindus are more often than not forced to move out of areas where Muslims attain a majority due to harassment by the latter.
