Navaikulam Naga temple murtis destroyed near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

A few days ago, the murtis of the Kaipalliyil Nagarukavu – Madan Nada temple were destroyed and the temple was desecrated by unknown vandals at Navaikulam in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala.

A small but powerful Serpent Temple, it lies 40 km north of Thiruvanthapuram city. It protects its surrounding areas and it is believed that whoever disturbs such Nagas will be cursed forever.

No media reported the crime even though complaints were filed by the devotees who discovered this horrendous crime when they came to light diyas in the evening. This incident would have gone almost unknown had it not been for another news item that appeared on Monday.

The temple vandalism news appeared on the Popular Front of India (PFI) mouthpiece Thejas News, as part of a news story about alleged stone pelting on a local mosque.

The Malayalam website reported that around 10 pm this Sunday, locals apprehended a Kilimanoor resident named Sudheer for allegedly throwing a stone at a local mosque that destroyed its digital board, said mosque being located in the same vicinity as the temple. They added that Sudheer tried to run and that locals chased him down near a school, one km away. The headline called it an attack against a temple and a mosque. Meanwhile, the fine print said that it was not clear whether Sudheer was behind the temple attack!

Incidentally, the vandals who threw away the temple murtis had also tried to loot the hundi (donation box) but failed. The attempts made on the cash box look more like a diversionary tactic than anything else.

A perception is being built that a Hindu was behind both the attacks (assuming that the stone thrown at the mosque was not staged to deflect attention from the horrible temple desecration) and a ‘Hindu extremist disrupting Kerala’s communal harmony’ narrative is being woven. When a dangerous Islamist terror organization like PFI starts pontificating about communal harmony, as the Thejas News article does, rest assured that there is more than meets the eye. The same Kerala media that sat silent when the temple desecration occurred can now be expected to spring into action using the new narrative created by Thejas News.

Naga Temples of Kerala

To atone the sins of killing Kshatriyas, Bhagwan Parasurama approached the holy Rishis who asked him to gift land to the people. This piece of land reclaimed from the sea when Sri Parasurama threw the axe (that was blessed and given to him by Bhagwan Shiva) is called Kerala. Unfortunately, citizens started leaving the land when they found the soil saline and more importantly since it was heavily infested with extremely poisonous snakes.

Sri Parasurama was advised penance to please Shiva, who in turn taught him that the only way out was if the flaming poison of serpents was spread into the soil. For this, Sri Parasurama had to worship Sri Nagaraja, the king of the various Nagas (snakes). His penance pleased Sri Nagaraja, who appeared before him.

Sri Parasurama prostrated before his lotus feet and ferocious serpents arrived at once and spread flaming Kalakuda poison. This was the same poison obtained when Devas & Asuras churned the ocean to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. It seeped into the earth, desalinated the soil and gave it greenery seen nowhere else. Before leaving, Sri Nagaraja blessed the land forever and it is for this divine protection, that snakes are worshipped.
