No retaliation of temple destruction : why have Hindus become so passive?

Some incidents in last few days have been another painful reminder of the impotence that has now permeated Hindu society. A Muslim mob in Pakistan‘s KPK burnt down another Hindu temple. This happens regularly in Pakistan. However, attacks on temples in Bharat, specially Andhra Pradesh, also continue to happen. In Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district, a 400 year old murti of Bhagwana Rama was beheaded by miscreants.

This is not the first such incident. In recent months, attacks on temples in Andhra have increased. This is happening with rapid Christianisation of Andhra Pradesh under the patronage of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s family.

What is surprising is the lack of any largescale outrage against these incidents against Hindus and Hindu Dharma. There are no widespread protests, no statements of regret by our national leaders and of course no international outrage on persecution of Hindus. In any case, if Hindus do not protest, expecting the same from others is foolish.

The Muslim narrative

Consider if the same had happened to a Muslim mosque. We have enough incidents in the past to arrive at an answer. There was an unused disputed structure at the Ram Janmabhumi in Ayodhya. When Hindus reclaimed it, Muslims destroyed thousands of temples all over the world in retaliation!  In Pakistan alone, a survey conducted by All Pakistan Hindu Rights Movement (PHRM) found that out of 428 Hindu places of worship in the country, 408 have been converted into toy stores, restaurants, government offices, madrasas and schools after 1990. There were hundreds of instances of destruction of temples in Bangladesh and even in Kashmir!

Dawood Ibrahim orchestrated the 1993 bomb blasts in Bombay to avenge Ayodhya. More than 250 people died and thousands were injured. Even after all that, Hindus are blamed even today for the fractured Bharatiya society. Even today, Babri Mosque draws inflamed speeches from Muslim leaders and they have promised/threatened to make it again at the same place when the time is right!

An incident in MP in which a flag from a mosque was removed results in loud condemnations of Hindus, allegations of fascism and chest beating all over social media and on streets. Needless to say, Muslims know how to claim victimhood even when the real victims are Hindus. They also get support from their national level leaders, other Hindu leaders and even international media and political organisations. Pakistan, where Hindus have become a micro-minority, claims that Bharat is being ruled by fascist forces, and many politicians of Bharat agree!

Christian narrative

The position of Christians is similar. A stray cricket ball breaks a church window, or a thief breaks in the church,  in Delhi and all hell breaks loose. International leaders call Bharatiya PM to ensure well being of Christians in Bharat! Bharat is maligned as an unsafe country and Hindus as an intolerant community all over the world. A nun in Assam is raped by Bangladeshi illegals and allegations are raised against Hindus. Although raping of nuns seems to be a regular occupation of church priests themselves, that is happily condoned as an internal religious matter. Whenever  law is tightened to regulate foreign funding of conversion factories, national and international media paints it as an attack on religion.

Bharat enacted a law to provide shelter to minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Similar laws are used by Christians of Pakistan to move to Canada, Europe or US. However, In Bharat, church opposes that because it sees an enemy in the BJP and Hindus. So, again Bharat is vilified internationally for making a law to provide shelter to minorities!

Church openly supports fractures in society like tribal-non Tribal, north and south, dalits and others, but when its members are arrested for the same, it claims victimhood. An army of media houses, domestic and international, amplifies its claims and Christian nations and their organisations support its claims.

Why no Hindu outrage?

The same outrage on streets or even in media is not made in case of persecution of Hindus. The reason is that Hindus have been thoroughly secularized by education, media and entertainment industries. It can be argued that this is same for all communities as all study in same schools, read same papers and watch same movies etc.

However, this is not strictly true. Minorities have a right to run their own schools, which they do and provide religious education in their schools. They also get their information from other sources of communication. The Urdu press and Christian newspapers are not apparent to Hindus, but they exist. Further, their places of worship are under their own control and these act as focal points of the community.

Hindus have none of these advantages. They cannot get religious instruction in schools, or in temples. In fact, it is getting increasingly difficult to get a competent Hindu priest, whereas Christians and Muslims have well funded and well attended schools that churn out priests, who are not only well versed in their own religion, but also study other religions for the express purpose of converting others!

Further, Hindus have no national level organisation. Even RSS is a secular organisation as is evident from its deeds and statements. Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal are severely underfunded and are more infamous than they are capable. Indeed, many people join such organisations with the sole intention of furthering their own political career or to get some fame.

Thus, we are not able to produce committed and capable leaders with a Hindu ideology. All mass mobilisation happens only because of capable organizers and selfless cadre. It is not as if at local level there are no protests. Local people do protest, but to take that on a bigger level, one needs support from a whole ecosystem. Such an ecosystem is more or less non-existent.

Conclusion

Hindus were not always so unmindful of their Dharma. We are the people that built the Somnath temple so many times after its repeated destruction by fanatic Muslims. Hindus built and rebuilt temples wherever Muslims broke them. However, we are now hampered by two major weaknesses.

Firstly, there is no state patronage for Hindu Dharma. Such a patronage existed before 1947 and that led to a Hindu revival in 18th century. Maharani Ahilyabai was able to construct and rebuild hundreds of temples as she was not constrained by a secular constitution. In fact, the secular state is directly against the interests of Hindus, the largest stateless religion in the world!

Secondly, the demographic danger to Hindus is being overlooked. Be it grooming jihad, rampant conversions or SC/ST activism, the goal is to break portions of Hindus away from their dharma. In many areas, Hindus are becoming minorities and within one or two generations, would be irreversibly weakened. To compound this, the missionary spirit of Hindus is lost. Thus, Muslims can promise that they will rebuild Babri one day, but even the most optimist Hindu scarcely has confidence to say that we will remake temples in Pakistan one day!

The situation is dire and yet, most of us remain oblivious to it. Unless we deliberate, discuss and act on these weak points, the future remains bleak.
