On the evening of 21st January, 24-year-old Tina Koley (only daughter of a poor farmer Sambhucharan Koley) was returning by bicycle to her village Ghoshpur, Polba Police Station area, Hooghly district, West Bengal after her part-time job in a private computer centre, when Sheikh Hasem Ali molested her and beat her with an iron rod, before looting her ornaments and money.
Tina suffered severe injures and luckily recovered after struggling for life in hospital. Initially, locals alleged police inaction with OC of Polba Police Station saying “Sheikh Hasem Ali claimed that he was in a relationship with the girl, and its their internal matter”. But police has now arrested Ali after strong protest from villagers.
Tina too denied any relationship with the man and blamed police for defaming her character. She and her family say that they have lost faith on Bengal police and are pleading Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for justice. But seeing how Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly denied crimes against Hindu women in Bengal so as not to upset her Muslim votebank, Tina’s pleas are likely to go unheard.
