Hindu marriage procession attacked in UP, 5 injured

A Hindu marriage processions was attacked with lathis when it was passing through a Muslim-dominated area of village Johri, district Baghpat, Western UP, reports Dainik Jagran.

The baraatis (people in the groom’s procession) for marriage of Harbir’s daughter Sarita were dancing to the DJ and tossing coins and notes in the air. As children were scrambling to collect the money, they were brushed aside by some of the baraatis. Angered at this, Muslim villagers attacked the marriage procession and injured 5 members of the wedding party.

The aggrieved party then proceeded to jam the Baraut-Binauli road, demanding police action against the accused. Police had to use light force to disperse the crowd and open the jam. Injured were taken to CHC for treatment.

Police assured the people of investigation & action, and finally the marriage went ahead.

While one hopes to see an end to the vulgar practise of tossing money during the baraat, a recent phenomenon seen mostly in parts of UP and other northern states, it is still no reason to launch a murderous assault on such a joyous occasion. Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb, anyone?

Just last month, another Hindu wedding procession was attacked in Dewas, MP as the baraat was passing in front of a mosque. One young man, Dharmendra Shinde (25), was killed in that assault.
