Senior defence analyst slams Hindustan Times for carrying Chinese propaganda ‘paid news’

Bharat is involved in a tense stand-off with China at the Ladakh-Tibet border. This latest clash which began with China’s ingress into Bharat’s territory from April onwards has already claimed the lives of 21 Bharatiya and over 30 Chinese soldiers.

Our English-language media and the ‘public intellectuals’ who populate its op-ed pages claim to be the ultimate guardians of the Republic, the arbiters of national interest. But such superficial claims and sermons hide a very ugly reality.

During the last few months, mainstream media and Lutyens’ intellectuals have swung from one extreme to the other over the border dispute – in the early days of the stand-off, there were loud calls (accompanied with jeering remarks about the PM’s ’56-inch chest’) demanding the Government immediately and forcefully defeat China’s expansionist designs; later when the Govt. had managed to mobilise additional forces and our Army launched counter-manoeuvres of their own to outflank the Chinese, there were calls for restraint and dialogue.

So when the country is in such a heightened state of alertness against a hostile neighbour with a history of duplicitous attacks, one would expect the media to avoid anything which helps the enemy’s cause. But what does our Lutyens’ media do?

And Hindustan Times is not the only one who does this, many newspapers can be found carrying such full-page advertorials planted by the Chinese. Questions also need to be asked of the I&B minister Prakash Javdekar on why such Chinese propaganda is being allowed?

Likewise, when the Govt. announced a ban on Chinese mobile apps, barred Chinese telecom equipment vendors from govt. contracts, and citizens called for boycott of Chinese products – the usual quarters labelled these as ‘knee-jerk, emotional, short-sighted’ measures. They claimed, and rightly so , that China’s huge leap over us in manufacturing and technology rendered such moves inconsequential.

But you can bet your last rupee that as and when the Govt. introduces labor, land, education, bureaucratic, financial and other reforms to bolster our industrial and manufacturing base and to advance defence equipment indigenisation, many of the same Lutyens’ analysts and media outlets will support those opposing such reforms under guise of social justice, environment, worker rights and what not! We have already seen how the ‘Soot buit ki sarkar’ slur hurled at the Modi govt. by Rahul Gandhi over land reform legislation in 2015 was cheered by Lutyens.

The Lutyens’ establishment is rooted in the Congress, Nehruvian ecosystem. It is good to see that relatively more independent and credible voices like Brahma Chellaney are beginning to counter this ‘run with the hare, hunt with the hounds’ chicanery that Nehruvian elites have got away with all these years.
