Shocking crimes against women in Rajasthan which Lutyens’ media will ignore

The Hathras case has thrown Lutyens’ media into a frenzy, and the first dynasty of the country is in overdrive demanding the resignation of CM Yogi Adityanath. Such is the clout they still exercise over the public narrative that it is being spun as if the brutal attack on the Hathras 19-year-old is the only gory crime against women in recent times.

But as readers of HinduPost will know, this is far from true. Often, crimes such as Hathras are buried on inside pages of Hindi or regional language reports, and only an exalted few are considered news-worthy by the English-language ‘national’ media. The decision-making matrix that drive this selective coverage has been covered in a previous article.

But for now, let’s cast a glance at the cases which have piled up in Congress-ruled Rajasthan in the same period as the Hathras braveheart was fighting for her life in hospital from 14th Sept onwards. The list has been compiled with aid of this twitter thread and other sources:

1.) Two minor sisters (aged 13 and 15) from Baran were abducted, drugged and gang-raped for 3 days in Jaipur, Kota and Ajmer. However, the police denied they were raped and Rajasthan CM has stated the girls were not ‘forced’ and went with the accused, also said to be minors, of their ‘own free will’. The victims’ family however says they were threatened by the accused in front of police.

2.) A woman was dragged and gang-raped in the field by Tipu Sultan and others in Ramganj police station area of Ajmer district. As per another report, the victim was a newly-wed Dalit woman.

3.) A married woman was gang-raped by six men in front of her young nephew in Rajasthan’s Alwar district. Worse, the woman was even forced to have physical relations with her nephew and the culprits created a video of the misdeed and later made it viral on social media. 5 accused including Aasam Meo aka Dhoota, Sahud Meo, a 16-year old minor and others have been arrested. Meo Muslim criminal gangs of this area, which falls in the historical Mewat region, are notorious for cow smuggling, auto theft etc.

4.) A woman from Mumbai was gang raped in Jaipur by 4 men who run stalls near SMS Hospital

5.) A minor girl was gang-raped by 3 men near Sanwli Road, Sikar who also shot a video of the crime. 2 accused have been arrested.

6.) 3 foreigners have lodged a complaint of rape in Jaipur and Delhi by one Rupak Chatterjee who has been arrested.

7.) A girl child who had gone to swim in a canal with her small brother was raped and strangled to death by a man in Anadra police station area, Sirohi.

8.) A girl student was stabbed and shot dead by another student Vishnu Chaudhary near her college in Rajapark area of Jaipur when she had gone to appear for her graduation final year examination.

9.) A 17-year student from Maharashtra who had come for coaching to Kota was raped for many months by the hostel manager.

10.) A Rajasthan police constable was arrested for attempt to rape a minor in Nagaur.

11.) A minor girl was raped in Jaipur’s Malviya Nagar – the accused also tried to blackmail the girl for sexual exploitation by his friends.

12.) A minor girl who was gang-raped by Manoj Gurjar and Harikesh Gurjar in Dholpur later committed suicide.

13.) 19-year-old Manbhar was found in a field in Bhilwara strangled to death and her face crushed with a rock. Police is investigating the case.

14.) A woman was lured away from the bus stand and gang-raped in a nearby field by 2 men in Bonli, Sawai Madhopur.

15.) A married woman was raped multiple times in Sikar by a youth who threatened to harm her family.

This is the state of affairs in a state that is right next to Delhi, and thus the ‘tyranny of distance’ excuse that was once trotted out by Rajdeep Sardesai to defend his channel’s limited coverage of 2012 Assam riots will not fly. We won’t even go into the neglected state of law & order and women’s safety in states like Kerala and West Bengal – clearly national media has no interest in covering those.

So if you thought that English-spouting liberals have any integrity towards the cause of women’s safety and this commitment is driving their incessant coverage of the Hathras case, think again. This is just a calculated show of fury and moral indignation, with a single-point political agenda that has UP CM Yogi Adityanath, the bête noire of liberal-seculars, firmly in the crosshairs.

This is not to excuse the UP police, or any police in the country for that matter. The stories you heard about police reluctance to file FIRs, their insensitivity towards victims, non-standardised investigative methods, below par prosecution, judges who set hardened & unrepentant rapists free thus emboldening them to attack and intimidate victims to withdraw cases – all of that is true.

The real remedy for women’s safety and for rule of law in the country requires police and judicial reform, and social measures like ban/monitoring of pornography, prevention of alcohol abuse, cleaning up Bollywood TV/web series’ degeneracy, promotion of community and family bonding, and a Dharmic values based wholesome education system.
