Already married father of seven, Abid Hawri, pretends to be a Hindu cop to trap woman for marriage: UP

A thrice-married Muslim man named Abid Hawri was arrested by UP Police after a Hindu lady came forward accusing him of hiding his identity and entrapping her for marriage, in a case of grooming jihad. He was arrested from his house in Sushant Golf City, Lucknow on Sunday morning.

The woman met Hawri in 2015 when he was house hunting and visited her house, and that’s how he acquired her phone number. He identified himself as Aditya Pratap Singh and claimed to work for the UP Police crime branch! He claimed to be a widower with a child from his first marriage. He lied to her telling her that he was ‘posted’ at Barabanki Crime Branch, Haidergarh, Sultanpur. She fell for him and they got married as per Hindu rites.

Police found several weapons and forged police documents at his house. Abid had been running his ‘office’ from this flat. He had used these documents to make his victims believe that he was indeed a police officer. Prachi Singh, ADCP, North Zone said that while posing as a police officer, the accused not only exploited women but also ran extortion rackets. She added, “We have arrested him and will question him to find the details of his criminal past.”

As per the FIR filed at Indiranagar police station, Abid sexually exploited the unsuspecting Hindu lady. After his identity was revealed as Abid Hawari, he asked her to marry him as per his religious customs. He blackmailed her using intimate photographs of theirs which he threatened to upload on the internet if his demands were not met. The lady runs a boutique and Hawri also ended up extorting nearly Rs. 20 lakhs from the woman

In May 2016, he forced her to convert to Islam and married her in a nikah ceremony. He changed her name to Ayesha and got it updated in her documents. He too had procured identities in the name of both Abid Hawari and Aditya Singh! After this she came to know that his original Muslim wife was still alive and that he had fathered seven children with her!

She did have her suspicions and asked him why she only saw him in uniform in photographs and not in real life. The criminal deflected the issue telling her that officers posted at the crime branch do not have to wear a uniform. He used to even use the police logo in his car. She informed the police that he had even contested panchayat elections from his native village Bakhara in Azamgarh district.

Recently, the victim came to know that Abid married another Hindu girl from Arjunganj, the third Hindu woman he has trapped for marriage, this year in a lavish ceremony. The victim decided to cut off all ties with the criminal but he continued to harass her. She then approached the UP police for justice.

Abid Hawri has been booked by the police under several sections including Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, rape, extortion, criminal intimidation, remarrying during the lifetime of wife, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
