Adv. Chandni Shah fights for Chennai Jain bakery owner forced to shut shop by Islamic extremists

A Jain bakery owner in Chennai was recently arrested for privately sharing an image ad of his bakery with the added message ‘Made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staffs’ among requesting clients on WhatsApp. Mumbai based lawyer Advocate Chandni Shah has come to the aid of the owner and filed a complaint with the cyber cell against one Rizwan Nizami who made this private message public. Hindupost got in touch with Ms Chandni Shah with regard to the case.

Advocate Chandni informed us that the entire episode has been twisted and the owner of the bakery has been made a victim by Delhi-based High Court lawyer Rizwan Nizami who deliberately tweeted the picture to present it as if the bakery owner was discriminating on religious grounds and promoting anti-Muslim sentiment which is far from the truth.

In reality, the bakery did not put up any discriminatory public advertisement. The private message showing an ad of the bakery with the added message ‘Made by Jains on orders, no Muslims staffs’ was merely sent as a reply to those clients who had been calling them up to enquire if the bakery employed any Muslim staff. It is pertinent to note that just a few days before the Jain bakery owner was arrested, a Muslim man was arrested in Maharashtra for a TikTok video showing him spitting on bread while cutting it in a bakery. Before that, other cases of legal action against Muslims for licking currency notes or spitting on fruits had come to light.

To reassure his clients, the Jain bakery owner edited the message on the original advertisement and sent the same through WhatsApp ‘only and only’ to those who had made such an enquiry. It must be noted that nowhere else has this image been used and the owner never intended to discriminate against any non-Jain group.

However, Delhi based lawyer Nizami put this out in public domain without verifying with the owner and made the baseless claim that the bakery was ‘discriminating against Muslims’. Advocate Shah has made it clear that a purely private conversation between the owner and his client was misused to spread the ‘Islamophobia’ lie which was in turn picked up by mainstream media (MSM).

All major media outlets ran the story without as much as verifying the facts and giving the owner a chance to present his side of the story. This irresponsible behaviour ultimately led to the arrest of the owner who he is merely 33 and had to shut down his business. If this trauma wasn’t bad enough, he and his family have been getting death threats. Ms. Shah informed that he has shut off all phones fearing for his and his family’s safety as a result of which she was subsequently unable to get in touch with him.

However, Ms. Shah stated that the police complaint has been accepted and she intends to continue the fight. She is awaiting the response of the Delhi police under whose jurisdiction the case falls as Rizwan Nizami is from Delhi. Ms. Shah and Advocate Vibhor Anand have also sent legal notices to 4 news channels – India Today, Indian Express, News 18, NDTV – demanding an explanation for their ignorant and irresponsible act of journalism in the Jain Bakery case.
