AIMIM worker arrested for raping minor Dalit girl in Hyderabad, PTI hides accused’s political affiliation

An AIMIM activist has been arrested in  Hyderabad for raping a minor Hindu Dalit girl. The accused, Shakeel Khan (24), had been stalking and threatening the girl (16) with gangrape if she did not accede to his demands. On the night of 5th May, he barged into the girl’s house and raped her. The girl, who works as a househelp, had lost both her parents many years back and now lives with her grandparents.

The complaint was lodged by the girl’s cousin, an auto-rickshaw driver who lives in the same Kamal Nagar basti (colony) as the victim. Khan lives around half-a-kilometre away from the basti, and is married.

The cousin and another person rushed to the girl’s house upon hearing her cries. But the accused managed to escape after hurling casteist abuses at the girl and her cousin, and threatening them with dire consequences as he is an AIMIM worker.

A case was registered at Chaderghat police station under IPC Sections 448 (house trespass), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 3 and 4 of POCSO Act and Section 3 (2) (v) of SCs STs POA Act. The accused has been arrested and is being produced in court, reports ANI.

Shakeel Khan is said to be an active AIMIM worker in Malakpet constituency, and close to AIMIM MLA from Malakpet, Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala. AIMIM is a party with roots in the Razakars, a private militia raised by the Nawab of Hyderabad to violently resist the integration of his princely state into the Union of India. It has held the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency seat for 10 consecutive terms since 1984 – 6 times by Salahuddin Owaisi and then 4 times by his son Asaduddin Owaisi.

However, while all locals of the area have clearly told journalists that the accused is a known AIMIM worker, and even the police statement records that Khan threatened the victim with his political connections, mainstream news agency PTI has hidden this fact as well the girl’s Hindu Dalit identity.

They have even erred in getting basic facts rights. The PTI report claims the accused is an auto-rickshaw driver, whereas it was the complainant, the girl’s cousin, who is the auto-rickshaw driver in this case. This distorted and half-true ‘news’ has been carried by many mainstream outlets like Outlook, Business Standard, The Week, Republic World etc.
