Armed Men Take Dairy Owner Hostage, Steal 18 Buffaloes In Muzaffarnagar, UP

Armed men barged into a dairy in Muzaffarnagar district, UP on Wednesday night and stole 18 buffaloes after holding 3 people hostage for over 1 hour, Hindi daily Amar Ujala has reported.

Dairy owner Naresh Kumar, who is also an ex-village head, is a resident of village Ratnapuri and his dairy is located on Rardhana road where he keeps over 2 dozen cattle. Kumar, his son Mohit and elder brother Satbir were sleeping at the dairy, when around midnight, 6 armed men entered the dairy by climbing over the boundary wall.

They overpowered the 3 men at gunpoint, snatched their mobiles and tied them up. They had covered their faces with cloth, and assaulted Mohit when they thought he was trying to identify them. Then they loaded 8 buffaloes into a vehicle parked outside, and also stole Kumar’s bike.

After the robbers left, Satbir somehow managed to free his hands, and the 3 reached the village to inform police. Police combed the entire area but could not apprehend the culprits. From tire marks, it appears that the intruders arrived in 2 vehicles.

The stolen buffaloes are valued around Rs. 15 lakhs. BKU (Bharatiya Kisan Union) leaders too arrived at the spot and demanded police crack the case on priority. Villagers protested outside the police station and also blocked the Khatauli-Budhana road.

It is suspected that the cattle thieves are around 19-20 years of age. Police is using forensic teams, dog squad and technical surveillance to investigate the case.

This incident again shows how cattle theft by a well-organized and well-armed mafia is a major law & order issue in the villages and small towns of Uttar Bharat. The booming beef export industry, both legal and otherwise, is a major incentive for these criminal gangs, whose actions are also leading to social tensions in the hinterland.
