Armyman lynched to death in Gurdaspur Gurudwara

An armyman was lynched to death at the Gurudwara located at Gurdaspur’s Tibri Road on the intervening night of 1 and 2 July. As per reports, the mob that lynched armyman Deepak Singh was led by the Gurudwara manager.

Singh works for GREF (General Reserve Engineer Force) and was posted at Arunachal Pradesh. He is a resident of Lahri Sarmon station Taragarh and was returning home after six months. As per information provided by his father Onkar Singh, Deepak got off at the Amritsar Airport and was traveling to Pathankot by bus.

He, however, mistakenly alighted at the Kahnuwan Chowk. His father said that Deepak had called him late at night to inform him that a mob had beaten him up on suspicions of theft. He had gone to the Gurudwara for drinking water at around 11 PM.

Police managed to rescue Deepak and got him admitted to a hospital where the armyman breathed his last. Onkar Singh has alleged that his son was murdered by Gurjeet Singh and Dalbir Singh among others. The police had at first registered a case of negligent homicide.

However, Deepak’s family members and villagers protested against the same by blocking the Pathankot-Amritsar national highway. They kept the dead body of the deceased on the road during their protest. Following this, the police were forced to file a murder case against the accused. Onkar Singh has leveled allegations that the police are attempting to shield the accused.
