Bag containing tiffin bomb, hand grenades & 100 cartridges recovered in Amritsar

A bag containing firearms and RDX was recovered from Punjab’s Bacchiwind area which Pakistan sent across the border using a drone. A major terror incident in the run-up to Bharat’s independence day was foiled as the police successfully diffused a tiffin bomb that was kept in the bag.

DGP Dinkar Gupta addressed the media and said that the police have successfully foiled a Pakistani terror plot. Drone movement was spotted in the border area on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Following this, the ex-chief of Dalake village alerted the police.

He said that he heard some drone-like sounds and subsequently the thud of an object being dropped. Police reached the spot and began search operations. Late on Sunday evening at around 6.30 they recovered the bag containing explosives.

The bag contained 7 packets in all. The police recovered 100 cartridges of 9mm, 5 hand grenades, and a pink tiffin box filled with 3 kgs of RDX connected to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The tiffin bomb could be blasted in 3 different ways – through a magnetic trick that exploded on heavy movement, time bomb spring technique where the bomb would blast sometime after being activated, and it could also be set off using a mobile or remote device.

In view of the complicated nature of the bomb, the National Security Guard (NSG) and bomb diffusal squad was called in who took the bomb into their custody and subsequently diffused it. DGP Gupta said that this is a deliberate attempt by Pakistan to cause communal disharmony in Punjab ahead of independence day.

Gupta stated that the intention behind using an attractive tiffin box with cartoon pictures was to attract children who would then pick the box. Since the bomb could be triggered using a remote as well, the terrorists would set it off when the child reaches a crowded area with the box.

DGP Gupta called a meeting of all district police commissioners and SSPs apprising them of the recovery of explosives. They were asked to step up security in their respective areas in view of the security threat during the upcoming independence day. They were also informed about the complicated bomb and told to conduct intensive search operations. BSF (Border Security Force) along with the police conducted thorough searches throughout Amritsar.
