A 26-year-old girl named Pooja ended her life by hanging and in her suicide note, she held Adil Khan responsible for forcing her to take the extreme step. Her family has alleged that Adil trapped her into a relationship and was forcing her to convert to Islam.

A young and independent middle class girl came to an untimely death after being involved in a poisonous relationship in which she was beaten, sexually exploited and forced to do suicide by Adil Khan. Pooja, who was working in Dial-100 call center, was found hanging by her mother on 9th January. She had hanged herself with her scarf when most of the family members were away except her mother. Her father was in village while brother Rahul was in office.

As per Bhopal Samachar, in her brief 5-line suicide note, Pooja wrote:

My name is Pooja. I am going commit suicide. Adil Khan is responsible for this. Adil Khan s/o Khaliq Khan

At the end of the note, she gave the mobile number and address of Adil.

According to her brother Rahul, she took the extreme step after Adil Khan left her for not converting to Islam for marriage. He also alleged that it was a case of grooming (love jihad) as Adil had introduced himself as Bablu and hid his true identity in initial stages from her. After she found out about his true name, Adil had begun to pressurize her to convert to Islam but Pooja was not ready for it.

After 8 years of an abusive relationship, when Pooja still resisted his conversion bid, Adil left her and got engaged elsewhere. After having endured mistreatment which included physical beatings and sexual and emotional manipulation, Pooja was shattered at the news. In desperation, she felt that she has no option left except committing suicide.

Unfortunately, cases such as these are not uncommon. Barely 200km away, in Indore, a similar case was reported by a Hindu girl who alleged that Sameer Multani s/o Iqbal introduced himself as Raj and after gaining her confidence, exploited her physically and financially.  Luckily, in this case, the girl showed courage by reaching out to police before she could come to serious harm.

As Madhya Pradesh has followed suit set by Yogi Adityanath government and enacted Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Ordinance 2020 to curb illegal conversion and grooming bids, these two cases highlight the necessity of such laws that enable and empower young Hindu girls and give them safety from grooming, entrapment and forced conversions.
