Father-in-Law Demands Halala After Husband Gives Triple Talaq to Wife in Bareilly

Nusrat’s husband Saleem had thrown her out of house for dowry after giving triple talaq few years after marriage. After reconciliation, he agreed to remarry her but her father-in-law kept the condition of Nikah Halala for their remarriage. He wants Nusrat to do Halala with him and only then he will allow his son to remarry her.

Halal is an Islamic marriage practiced which involves a female divorcee marrying someone else, consummating the marriage and then getting a divorce in order to make it allowable to remarry her previous husband

Feeing helpless and left with no other choice, Nusrat reported the incident to the police. She has also written letters to CM and DGP office for help. While talking on camera with Zee News, she pleaded to PM Modi and CM Yogi for justice.

Nusrat in her complaint registered in Baradari Police Station of Bareilly alleged that her father-in-law is forcing her to make physical relation with him. According to police, she was married to Saleem three years ago. Her alcoholic husband demanded money and used to beat her regularly. One day when the matter escalated, he have Triple Talaq and banished her from the house. After that, she returned to her father’s house.

Nusrat’s mother corroborated her statements and said that when Nusrat’s family members tried to reconcile with her father-in-law, he repeated his demands. After listening to his demands, Nusrat has filed complaint against Saleem, his father, mother and brothers in Baradari Police Station. Bareilly city SP Rohit Sajwan said that he has received Nusrat’s complaint and action will be taken after further investigation.

Nusrat’s story exhibits the deplorable state of women within the Muslim community, due to outdated customs like Triple Talaq and Nikah Halala. This is not the first time such an issue has come into light. But English language MSM has repeatedly failed Muslim women in raising such issues with required intensity due to the facade of political correctness. Shockingly, a probe last year showed how even Islamic religious scholars charge between Rs 20,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh to participate in one-night stands as part of nikah halala, in order to enable a woman to remarry her first husband.

Efforts put by the NDA government to bring reforms within the Muslim community have faced stiff opposition from Congress citing that these reforms should come from within the society, or citing inane logic like outlawing triple talaq will lead to Muslim men getting arrested and harm Muslim families. Congress and all other opposition parties obstructed the passing of Triple Talaq Bill which criminalizes instant triple talaq during Winter session of the parliament . Now, the question is till when the women of Muslim community will face the brunt of communal vote bank policies of our political parties.
