Brahmin man found dead after Muslims accused of gang-raping daughter put pressure to withdraw case

29 June was supposed to be a happy occasion for a Hindu family of Alwar, Rajasthan. On that day, the elder daughter of the family was supposed to be married, but the shadow cast by the father’s murky death following the year-long sexual assault on the younger daughter (16) by a neighbouring Muslim family, has plunged the household in grief.

On 18 June, the rape survivor attempted suicide but was rescued by bystanders. On the morning of 24 June, the day she was scheduled to record her statement with a district magistrate, her father who worked as an agricultural laborer was found hanging just 500 metres from his home. The family says he was murdered.

As reported by Swarajya, the FIR lodged by them says that prime accused Mohammed Anis’s family had been putting a lot of pressure on them for “compromise” in the sexual assault case, and that four men – Anis’s father Sumaruddin, his brothers Mehboob and Anjum, and Taufiq – strangled the father to death and hanged him when he stepped out for his morning ablutions.

Deceased Father of Rape Survivor

The incident occurred in Balotnagar locality of Ramgarh town, district Alwar, Rajasthan. Though an investigation has yet to confirm whether it was a case of suicide or murder, the deceased’s family strongly allege the hand of the accused Muslims in his death. News18 has also reported that the deceased man was under extreme pressure to withdraw the case against the person(s) who allegedly raped his daughter.

In coverage by Dainik Bhaskar, it is reported that Anis was harassing the minor girl for the last one & a half years. Despite her reluctance to be friendly with him, he would constantly approach her. Even though she was a brilliant student and had secured 85% marks in 10th exams, she had to discontinue studies to avoid stalking by Anis. He also reportedly raped her multiple times and would pressurize her for sexual favours. Due to this physical and mental torture, the girl decided to end her life and jumped in a well on 18th June. Luckily some bystanders rescued her in time and saved her life. When her family asked her the reason for taking this drastic step, she told them that she was being harassed by Anis and others.

The family decided to lodge an FIR against the accused but the police dragged its feet as the accused are said to be influential in the area which is 80% Muslim. Police delayed booking the accused and even when they did, they only booked Anis for disturbing peace and did not even arrest his accomplices. Meanwhile, they and the accused party kept asking the girl’s family to compromise and withdraw the case. They even threatened that they will get the planned marriage of the elder daughter canceled and the family will have to face public ignominy as a result.

On 23 June, the girl in her police statement divulged details of sexual abuse at the hands of Anis and others. The family, till now, was not fully aware of the full extent of atrocity on the girl and this statement came as a shock to them, especially the father. The next morning, the father was found hanging – the family alleges that the accused family had called him before his death and they either forced him to kill himself or murdered him and hung his body.

Dainik Bhaskar’s Report of Incident

Because of his death and mounting pressure from Hindu organisations, higher administration finally became more active and gave a press statement assuring a fair trial and justice to the aggrieved family. Jila Yuva Brahman Sabha members and Vishwa Hindu Parishad representatives visited the family and made various demands on their behalf from government like employment for one dependent, fair trial of case, section 376 & 302 to be added in FIR and fixing accountability of errant policemen. They also said that since the family is economically weak, they will take up the legal case on their behalf so that family is not denied justice due to lengthy expensive trial.

However, the Swarajya report, in which the correspondent spoke to the deceased’s son, contains some more disturbing details – apparently, the girl spoke about her sexual harassment by Anis one year back, and when her brother accosted Anis’ father, he just shrugged his hands off the whole thing and asked the Hindu family to do as they pleased. 6 months back, the minor girl had tried to kill herself by swallowing sleeping pills.

Heavily outnumbered and wary of anti-Hindu laws like the ‘anti-lynching law‘ passed last year by the Congress govt., the family thought it better to just sell their property and move to a ‘Hindu area.’ But local Muslims, sensing their vulnerability, are offering them a pittance and hence this poor family is forced to continue staying put.

The stalking and predatory sexual exploitation of non-Muslim girls by Muslim youths is something we are repeatedly witnessing for many years. Just last month itself, it resulted in murders of two young girls Shivani Khobiyan and Naina Kaur. In the present case, it took the life of the rape survivor’s father.

Ramgarh and few other tehsils in Alwar fall in the Muslim-dominated Mewat region which is centred in Nuh district of Haryana. Mewat is notorious for such cases where a Muslim aggressor first commits a crime against a Hindu family and then uses his political and social clout to drive the survivor family into either withdrawing the case, suicide or simply migrating.

In July 2019, a Dalit youth Harish Jatav was lynched to death in Alwar district. Already broken by his son’s death, the blind father Rattiram Jatav kept running from pillar to post to get justice, but such was the influence of local anti-Hindu forces that he got no help from police or administration, while the accused kept threatening him of dire consequences if he did not withdraw the case. Frustrated & emotionally drained, he killed himself on 15 August, 2019.
