Fifth accused held in unauthorized cow slaughtering racket – Alwar, Rajasthan

The fifth accused involved in an unauthorised cow slaughtering racket operational in Rajasthan’s Alwar district was arrested as per a PTI report from August this year.

Govindgarh police arrested Sattar Khan from Bharatpur district who along with Shakil and his family members was allegedly involved in unauthorised cow slaughtering and selling beef, police said.

The accused was arrested from Bharatpur district, and it was the fifth arrest in the case, SHO, Govindgarh police station, Dara Singh said.

On July 31, police had seized nearly 220 cow skins, 82 buffaloes and 45 goats from a slaughter house suspected to be carrying out unauthorised activities, officials said.

Shakil Qureshi, his wife, mother and sister-in-law were later arrested for slaughtering a cow at their residence and nearly 40 kg suspected beef was seized from them, they added.

Based on the information provided by the arrested accused, Salim and then Sattar Khan were arrested, officials said.

Alwar & Bharatpur districts of Rajasthan are notorious for cow smuggling and illegal beef trade, as they are adjacent to the Nuh (earlier Mewat) district of Haryana which is the hub of this cattle smuggling racket that claims hundreds of lives each year, mostly of policemen and villagers trying to defend their cattle.

While this PTI news report was buried in the back pages of newspapers, any incident of alleged lynching in which a cow smuggler dies is grotesquely distorted and villagers protecting their livestock are demonized as terrorists.
