FIR lodged against SP leader who gave communal slant to Loni incident

UP Police has lodged an FIR against Samajwadi Party leader Ummed ‘Pahalwan’ Idrisi for spreading hate by giving a fake communal slant to the Loni incident. Pahalwan is said to be absconding.

The FIR says that Ummed Pahalwan knowingly gave a communal twist to the incident in his video, contrary to facts of the case. He has been booked under IPC 153A, 295A, 504, 505 and IT Act Section 67. The FIR also mentions that Facebook also allowed such a false and incendiary video to be broadcast, and made no attempt to fact-check the same.

The FB video has still not been taken down.

Here are the facts of the case. A Muslim trickster Abdul Samad was assaulted by a group who were aggrieved that the tabeez (amulet) sold by Samad to ‘change people’s fortunes’ was having the contrary effect on their lives. Out of 6 men named in the assaulting party, at least 3 were Muslims while the religious identity of 2 (Kallu, Poli) is not clear as yet.

2 days after the incident, local SP leader Ummed Pahalwan did a FB live stream from his home where he made Samad say that the assaulters had attacked him over his religion and were forcing him to chant ‘Jai Sri Ram’ and ‘Vande Mataram’. A video of the assault was also made viral by Islamist and left-liberal handles on social media, but with the soundtrack cunningly muted, to further bolster the propaganda that this was a religiously motivated hate crime.

However, police analysis of the original assault video found that there was no communal angle in the incident as was being claimed by Pahalwan and others. An FIR was lodged against the persons propagating this fake claim on Twitter, and even against Twitter itself for not marking the muted video as ‘manipulated media’ and acting against the handles giving communal color to the incident.

As we had highlighted in our previous report on the incident, that it was necessary to book Ummed Pahalwan too, UP Police has now done the same. The next logical step will be to hand out exemplary punishment to all involved in this case, so that a message goes to all such trouble-makers and anti-Hindu bigots who will get increasingly active as we get closer to UP elections next year. The repeated attempts to slander holy Hindu chants like ‘Jai Sri Ram’ and distort them into criminal slogans can only be ended through strict legal action.

The ball is now in the judiciary and state prosecutor’s court. Will they deliver true justice or go soft on these perpetrators, as has been the wont of our secular Republic?
