Disturbing news has emerged from the Shillong in the North-Eastern state of Meghalaya where a gang of twenty persons has brutally assaulted five Hindu youth in the age group of 20 to 24 years on Friday in Lawsohtun area as per reports published in the website Eastmojo.

The report quotes additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) GK Iangrai who has said that youths armed with iron rods, bamboos, and sticks have attacked the five boys belonging to different localities who used to gather at block VI Lawsohtun area every day to play basketball. He also said that the boys have been coming to the ground for the past two weeks.

Iangrai said that the injured were taken to Woodland Hospital where they were treated for their injuries and have now been discharged. An FIR has been filed on the basis of complaints registered by parents of three of the five victims.

One of the witnesses said that armed miscreants locked the entrance of the court before the assault in order to ensure that the victims do not escape and that the entire court was soaked in blood indicating the seriousness of the case.

TheNortheastToday.com informs us that the five boys have been identified as Aridam Das(22), Subharshi Das Purkayastha(22), Saptarshi(20), Pinak Deb(23) and Bishal Ghosh(24).

Meghalaya is a Christian tribal state – over 86% of its population belongs to Scheduled Tribes (STs) and 74% are Christian. This assault comes on the heels of violence in Meghalaya in early March after an anti-CAA and pro-ILP (Inner Line Permit) rally organized by the KSU (Khasi Students Union) clashed with non-tribals, leaving one Khasi tribal dead.

As a retaliatory response, a spate of stabbings of non-tribal people rocked the capital Shillong the next day in which a non-tribal vegetable vendor was killed and 9 other non-tribals injured. Subsequently, the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a banned Christian tribal terror group, had threatened ‘mass bloodshed’ if Hindu-Bengalis in Ichamati and Majai areas in East Khasi Hills district do not leave within one month.

It is sad and unfortunate that news from North-East in general and of such assault on Hindus in particular almost always escapes the notice of mainstream media. As an alleged journalist once stated ‘tyranny of distance’ is probably the reason for north-east Bharat being ignored.
