4 Muslim men have been arrested for dousing a youth, Vishnu Kumar Goswami, with petrol and setting him on fire after a minor dispute, reports Amar Ujala.
Vishnu, resident of Mughal Jot village in Chistipur area of Gonda district, UP, had gone to bring his father Ramdi Goswami back from Jamunia Bagh. On the way back, the father and son stopped to drink water on the side of the Gonda-Ayodhya highway.
There, the driver of a petrol tanker and few others got into an argument with Vishnu. The matter quickly escalated and the four accused – Imran, Tufail, Ramzan, Nizamuddin – doused Vishnu with petrol and set him on fire. Vishnu was badly burnt and brought to district hospital, from where he was sent to Lucknow’s KGMU Hospital with a police escort.
Although eyewitnesses have also corroborated Vishnu’s version of events, police is claiming that Vishnu first got into an argument with his father and the two came to blows. The accused men tried to intervene and calm the situation, but Vishnu started arguing with them too after which the four sprinkled petrol on him & set him on fire.
However, based on Vishnu’s complaint, police have registered a case under attempt to murder and other sections against Imran, Tufail, Ramzan and Nizamuddin. A large police contingent and PAC has been deployed in the area to prevent any communal outbreak. All 4 accused have been arrested.
Vishnu’s condition is critical, and he has given a statement to City Magistrate as well.
