In what could spell trouble for Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, three policemen have been arrested by the Vartak Nagar Police in a case related to the assault of civil engineer Anant Karmuse at Awhad’s residence, six months after the incident took place reports Maharashtra Times.
The assault had taken place at Awhad’s Thane bungalow over an alleged objectionable Facebook (FB) post. it has also been learned that the three policemen have been granted bail by the court.
Thane resident Anant Karmuse was abducted on the night of 5th April by policemen who then took him to Awhad’s bungalow for supposedly putting up a post against the minister. Karmuse’s complaint states that on reaching the bungalow, he was badly beaten up by 15 to 20 goons in the presence of Awhad.
Taking cognizance of the complaint, the Vartak Nagar police had registered a case against unknown persons for the assault. However, the Thane unit of BJP had aggressively taken up the case and asked for intervention and action from the Police Commissioner in addition to a thorough investigation.
The political environment had heated up with Mumbai BJP members who had intended to visit Karmuse being stopped by the police at Thane border. In view of all these developments, the Vartak Nagar police showed urgency and arrested five people in April itself.
As per the admission of a senior police official, three policemen have been arrested for their involvement in the Karmuse case. Two of the three are from the Mumbai police force while the third is from Thane and all of them had been appointed as the Minister’s bodyguards. He also admitted that it was these three who had brought Karmuse to the minister’s bungalow.
BJP MLA Niranjan Davkhare congratulated the police for arresting the three but added that the main accused is still out at large. He demanded that the three be thoroughly questioned so as to understand who is the mastermind of the entire episode and take action against him as well,
