Maha Vikas Aghadi – a saga of tall promises and zero action

As Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray led the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government completed 8 months in office on 28th July, we present a list of un-kept promises as highlighted by Twitterati who goes by the username Khadak Singh in his tweet thread.

Maharashtra is an industrial state, as well as an agricultural state, and the lockdown enforced by the Wuhan Virus pandemic led to a shutdown of industries putting laborers in economic difficulties. In the wake of this sudden economic crisis, it was made public that an economic package would be announced. Neither the economic package announcement nor the promised loan waiver for farmers is in sight.

When the Wuhan Virus pandemic was in its early stages, Health Minister Rajesh Tope had promised to set up a ‘five-member corona committee’. Such a committee is yet to see the light of the day while the state has raced to top the charts as far as the number of Wuhan Virus patients is concerned. Most of the promises made in relation to the pandemic have turned out to be nothing but hot air.

Private hospitals are still charging exorbitant fees despite the government announcing a cap on private hospital charges. This makes it absolutely clear that the government is not serious about implementing the policies it announces which allows the medical mafia to fleece helpless patients.

The mobile veterinary clinic announced by the CM to ensure optimum health of livestock on which farmers are dependent is yet to take off. Schools happily continue to overcharge parents despite the government making assurances that it would ensure that parents are not burdened with school fees considering the current crisis where many parents are going through an economic crunch.

There is absolutely no clarity regarding the government’s decision to reopen schools in the rural areas after ensuring adequate precautions are taken in view of the pandemic. The government has not been forthcoming in providing information in this regard. The government had even said that they would distribute free spectacles to school students. Like most other announcements, this also seems to be limited to being an announcement.

The government was supposed to ensure improvement in the tariff of ST (State Transport) buses by tying up with private players. However, in reality, ST employees have been left in the lurch to face economic crisis.

Besides the pandemic, the citizens of Konkan also had to face nature’s fury when Cyclone Nisarg hit the region. The promised compensation of Rs. 10,000 has not yet materialized besides neither has much been done to ease the life of the people hit by the cyclone such as restoration of power etc. The leader of the opposition (LoP) Devendra Fadnavis had also brought the plight of the people to the CM’s attention. The state government is yet to take any concrete action and ensure that the relief money reaches the locals.

The much-touted co-ordination committee to ensure the smooth functioning of the MVA government also remains a distant dream. Instead, one of the many things that this government seems to lack includes co-ordination. Every other day the Congress gets upset with something or the NCP has reason to complain despite putting up a brave face. CM Uddhav Thackeray’s decisions are more often than not super ceded leaving him red-faced with embarrassment.

Even the MVA common minimum program is limited to being on paper and miles away from implementation.

While the opportunistic allies are making merry by purchasing luxury cars for its MLAs, the citizens are left to fend for themselves, be it the cyclone or the Wuhan Virus pandemic. The public which is already facing multiple issues was even burdened with exorbitant electricity bills.

It seems that the citizens of Maharashtra have been thrown to the wolves as the MVA government is being pulled in different directions with no co-ordination between the allies leaving the state to suffer.
