Maharashtra lags far behind UP in contact tracing Covid-19 cases: Study

A study report by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) released a few weeks earlier indicates that Maharashtra lags far behind the populous Uttar Pradesh (UP) when it comes to contact tracing Covid-19 cases.

As per the study, while UP was tracing 32 people per patient, the comparative figure for Maharashtra stood at 7.6 persons per patient. Maharashtra’s internal report of 24th April stated that only 50% of the cases were being contact traced. The data for April 30th from UP shows that 103 persons per positive patient were being contact traced in the state. Although the number has slowed UP is still miles ahead of Maharashtra as far as contact tracing is concerned.

UP has also trumped Mumbai in this respect and is doing three times more contact tracing than the financial capital of the country. Despite the fact that Mumbai is testing 10 times higher than UP and has a population that is just one-tenth of the latter, the state is faring much better than Mumbai.

The comparative data between UP and Mumbai for the second week of June indicates that UP was contact tracing 57 persons per patient (June 13 data) while the figure for Mumbai stood at just 19 people per positive contact (June 14 data). As of June 13th UP, which has recorded 13,118 positive patients, had contact traced 7, 43,281 people.

The only silver lining for Mumbai so far is that it has surveyed nearly half its population. However, considering the rising number of cases in the city, contact tracing has to be stepped up if the spread of the virus is to be contained.
