Minor Dalit girl working as maid set on fire after rape attempt by employer Allam Mariah in Telangana

A minor 13-year-old Dalit girl is battling for life with over 70% burns after being set on fire by her 28-year-old married employer for resisting his rape attempt at his house in Mustafanagar, Khammam town in Telangana. The accused Allam Maraiah also belongs to the same community.

As per a report by The Hindu, the horrific crime took place on September 18 at the accused’s house at Mustafanagar in Khammam town, where the girl was working as a domestic help. Initially, the matter was hushed up as the accused used community elders to intimidate the parents of the girl, the report adds. The accused got the minor girl, who suffered 70% burn injuries, admitted to a private hospital on September 18 by projecting the burn wounds as accidental.

A few days back, the father of the accused, Allam Subbarao, informed the girls’ father that she accidentally received burns while at work, reports Telangana Mata. When the parents arrived at the hospital, they saw the girl with severe burn injuries and the victim was not in a condition to speak.

The crime came to light only on Monday after local police came to know that a minor girl had been assaulted and was being treated at a private hospital. The girl was lying in the hospital for more than 20 days without an FIR being registered.

It appears that protests by several organisations pushed the administration and police into action. The traumatised girl told officials who visited the hospital following the outrage that Maraiah tried to rape her while his mother and pregnant wife were away. When she resisted, he poured petrol all over her body and set her on fire.

“When the girl resisted the man, he got angry, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. Later, she was shifted to a private hospital. We are investigating who brought her to the hospital. As far as we know, the accused himself brought her there. We have registered a suo motu case. The accused has been arrested and charged with attempt to rape and attempt to murder,” Khammam police commissioner Tafseer Iqubal told Times of India.

Officials are probing the role of the private hospital management which failed to inform the police immediately after the girl was admitted there, something they are required to do in medico-legal cases including those involving accidental burning. Another question that needs to be asked is why a 13-year-old was allowed to work alone as a house help in violation of child labour laws.

The girl’s condition is stated to be stable despite extensive burns.

This crime again shows that sexual assaults on girls and women and lax policing are not restricted to few states alone, as vested interests and mainstream media can lead one to believe. There are several underlying factors behind such crimes, but media incessantly stresses on certain tropes which suit their narrative. The Hathras case is being played up ad-infinitum while this attack on a Dalit girl will be ignored because it occurred in ‘secular’ Telangana and the perpetrator was also a Dalit.

The easy division of society into ‘oppressed’ lower caste/minorities and ‘privileged’ upper caste that our social justice warriors peddle is a misrepresentation. Even among OBCs/Dalits/minorities, the creamy layer (more prosperous) population can exhibit feudal attitudes in semi-urban and rural areas. The supremacist religious indoctrination of certain minority populations is another factor which is completely overlooked by media and left-liberal intellectuals.

Likewise, some of the long-lasting solutions to reduce crimes against women, such as promoting sanskars (Dharmic cultural values) through education and curbing degenerate movie and web-series content, are mocked and shot down as ‘saffronization’ and attack on ‘individual choice’.
