As Pakistan Kills Soldiers & Civilians on the Border, Still Want to Watch ADHM (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil)?

Ceasefire violations & terrorist infiltration attempts by Pakistan in the last one week have resulted in deaths of 4 soldiers and one 6-year-old boy, while several dozen soldiers and civilians have been injured, some critically. Ever since Bharat carried out surgical strikes across LoC on terror launch pads, there have been over 40 ceasefire violations by Pakistan.

  • A jawan was killed and another injured on Thursday night as Army foiled an infiltration bid in Tangdhar sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.
  • A BSF (Border Security Force) soldier, Head Constable Jitender Kumar from Motihari district of Bihar, died and seven people were injured, two of them critically, as Pakistan shelled at least 15 Bharatiya posts and nearly 30 hamlets along the international border (IB) in Arnia and RS Pura sub-sectors of Jammu district through Wednesday night.
    • The injured villagers have been identified as Jyoti sharma, 39, Raj Rani, 40, Lucky Sharma, 20, Abhi Sharma,18, Uday Sharma,10, Shano Devi, 55 of Gopar Basti and Kheru Ram of Korotana in RS Pura sector.
  • A six-year-old boy and a jawan were killed and 10 people, including 8 civilians, were injured in the heaviest cross-border shelling by Pakistani troops which targeted civilian areas and 25 posts of BSF along the International Border in Jammu throughout Sunday night.
    • BSF head constable Sushil Kumar, a native of Pehova in Kurukshetra of Haryana, died on October 24 , after being hit by a splinter in the chest, in RS Pura sector.
    • 6-year-old Vicky Kumar, belonging to a labourer family from Bihar, was killed in Pak shelling in Lalyal area of Kanachak sector. He had spent the night in a bunker and as soon as he came out to play, the splinter hit him, officials said.
    • Up to 30 cattle had also perished and 130 others were injured in the Pakistani firing and shelling.
  • BSF personnel Gurnam Singh of Magowali in Arnia area of RS Pura sector was critically injured by Pakistan in a sniper attack in Bobiya area of Hiranagar sub sector on October 21, and later died.

Bharat on Thursday ordered a Pakistani diplomat, Mehmood Akhtar, to leave the country by Saturday after he was caught receiving secret information about Bharat’s military deployments from two local spies. Akhtar was a soldier with Pakistan Army’s 40 Baloch Regiment since 1997 and was deputed to Bharat by the ISI in 2013.

Are we still going to ask ‘Will banning Pakistani artists solve our issues with Pakistan?’

Recently, in an interview with NDTV’s Barkha Dutt (where else), while speaking on the topic of boycotting Ae Dil Hai Mushkil as it stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan who refused to condemn the Uri terror attack, actress Shabana Azmi had launched an elaborate tirade against banning of Pakistani artists –

“By banning film actors from Pakistan is the Kashmir problem going to be solved? Is any problem going to be solved at all?”

This is a clever trick used by peaceniks and the ‘Aman ki Asha’ brigade in Bharat – they like to reduce Pakistan’s decades old multi-pronged jihad against Bharat to just the Kashmir issue alone. The underlying narrative is that if we accede to Pakistani demands on Kashmir or conduct a plebiscite in Kashmir, we can all live as one big happy family in South Asia.

This is a blatant lie which is spread by either #BreakingIndia forces or useful idiots. Pakistan’s state is fundamentally antagonistic to Bharat and its majority Hindu population. Hatred for Bharat and Hindus is part of the founding ideology of Pakistan, and that hatred has only deepened ever since the overt Islamization of every public institution was started by Pakistan’s President Zia-ul-Haq in the late 1970s.

It is not just the Pakistani Army, ISI and jihadi groups like LeT, JeM who harbor anti-Bharat & anti-Hindu hate..it is part and parcel of everyday life in Pakistan as even the words and actions of Pakistani sportsmen like Shahid Afridi, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad and artists like Marc Anwar demonstrate.

So to answer Shabana Azmi, banning film actors from Pakistan alone is not going to solve our conflict with Pakistan – but trade, cultural and sporting boycott is a very important tool in the multi-pronged strategy to detoxify the jihadi poison which has taken deep root in Pakistan. Till now, our relation with Pakistan since 1990s was extremely asymmetric in that despite repeated terrorist attacks sponsored by Pakistan, Bharat would always come back to the negotiating table and the world of films and cricket would continue unaffected – thus Pakistan was succeeding in its policy of bleeding Bharat with a 1000 cuts while maintaining a facade of normalcy in relations.

The surgical strikes post Uri have upset the Pakistani calculation, and the spate of ceasefire violations since then demonstrate how rattled they are. The call to boycott a film like ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ is a citizen’s movement – our Government has not even spoken of a ban on Pakistani films or artists. Yet, Pakistan has already gone ahead and banned Bharat’s TV content. Just like the surgical strikes post Uri, we need to repay Pakistan in the same coin on the cultural front by banning their artists and TV content.

Bharat has been a soft state for so long, that large parts of our establishment (bureaucracy, politicians, think tanks etc) are still unable to go the whole distance in taking decisive action. Surgical strikes and the aggressive diplomatic efforts to isolate Pakistan internationally are a welcome change – but we also need to declare Pakistan a terrorist state, downgrade diplomatic relations, retract their MFN (Most Favored Nation) trade status, and freeze all sporting and cultural ties (including no visas for Pakistani artists) till the time cross-border terror emanating from Pakistan stops.

Anyway, the hypocrisy of the liberal artistic types who claim that art has no boundaries while batting for Bharat-Pak ties is exposed when their hawkish stances on Israel are examined. It is clear that for this lot, global ummah goals like Palestinian cause outweigh the national intersts of Bharat.

Governments reflect the will of the people – if we are really serious about combating the terror threat posed by Pakistan, boycotting Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a small but necessary first step. We citizens need to boycott this movie and continue to put pressure through all possible means on our Government to take even more decisive actions against the terrorist state of Pakistan.
