Plight of Hindus in Bangladesh – Report of Human Rights Violations in July’18

Hindus in Bangladesh are one of the most persecuted communities in the world. Since January 2018, we have been tracking the various cases of Hindu human rights violations in Bangladesh –

We have followed different media reports to collate these crimes. Here is the report on human rights violations against Hindus of Bangladesh reported in the month of July’18 :

1. Home of Hindu assistant commissioner (Land) of Betagi sub-district under Barguna District of Bangladesh was attacked, his wife was stabbed, popular bilingual online newspaper of Bangladesh Bangla Tribune has reported on its Bengali website on 4th July, 2018.

2. 3-year-old Hindu boy Jayanta Paul was murdered for ransom by 2 Muslim murderers in Dhaka District of central Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Ittefaq has reported on 5th July, 2018.

3. 2 Hindu girls have been abducted by Muslims in Rangpur District of northern Bangladesh, Dhaka-based online Bengali newsportal eibela.com has reported on 7th July, 2018.

4. Hindu man was killed by Muslim loan shark in Naogaon District of northern Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Observer has reported in it’s Bengali website on 7th July, 2018.

5. Murti of Hindu gods were vandalized in Bogura District of northern Bangladesh. 2 Muslim perpetrators were nabbed in this connection, popular bilingual online newspaper of Bangladesh, Bangla Tribune has reported on its English website on 7th July, 2018.

6. Muslim land grabbers have been trying to evict Hindu family from their ancestral land in Shariatpur District of central Bangladesh, popular bilingual online newsportal of Bangladesh bdnews24.com has reported on its Bengali website on 8th July, 2018.

7. Muslim land grabbers have grabbed Hindu cremation ground in Thakurgaon District of north-western Bangladesh. Hindus were attacked during a funeral by Muslim land grabbers, 2 people were injured. Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Kaler Kantho has reported on 9th July, 2018.

8. Murti of Hindu goddess Maa Kali was found broken in Barishal District of south-central Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dhaka Tribune has reported on 9th July, 2018.

9. Hindu leader has received death threat in Khulna District of Bangladesh, Dhaka-based online Bengali newsportal, eibela.com has reported on 10th July, 2018.

10. Muslim land grabbers have been trying to evict Hindu family from their dwelling house in Narail District of south-western Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Samakal has reported on 11th July, 2018.

11. Hindu temple ground has been grabbed by wood businessmen in Naogaon District of northern Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Amader Shomoy has reported on 13th July, 2018.

12. Murti of Hindu God were demolished in Naogaon district of northern Bangladesh, a daily Bharatiya Bengali newspaper published from Kolkata Sangbad Pratidin has updated on 13th July, 2018.

13. Theft happened in goddess Kali temple in Narail District of south-western Bangladesh, Dhaka-based online Bengali newsportal eibela.com has reported on 14th July, 2018.

14. Hindu office assistant of a secondary school has been physically humiliated & forced to submit resignation letter by local Muslim union council chairman in Patuakhali District of south-central Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Protidiner Sangbad has reported on 15th July, 2018.

15. Vested Property Return Act: Religious and ethnic minority communities of Bangladesh are seeking Prime Minister’s intervention, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 15th July, 2018.

16. Muslim land grabbers have given death threats to a Hindu family in Lalmonirhat district of northern Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 17th July, 2018.

17. Hindu journalist was attacked and seriously injured in Naogaon District of northern Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Ittefaq has reported on 18th July, 2018.

18. Hindu goddess Kali murti was vandalised, head of goddess was taken away from temple in Lalmonirhat district of northern Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 19th July, 2018.

19. Hindu female labourer was hacked to death in Bogura District of northern Bangladesh, popular online bilingual newsportal jagonews24.com has reported in it’s Bengali website on 20th July, 2018.

20. Gold ornaments, cash money & mobile phone were robbed under gunpoint from a Hindu family in Narail District of south-western Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Jaijaidin has reported on 22nd July, 2018.

21. Hindu housewife was stabbed in Chattogram (former Chittagong) city of southeastern Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Samakal has reported on 22nd July, 2018.

22. A non-governmental organization’s (NGO) Hindu employee has been missing since 4 weeks from Shariatpur District of central Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Ittefaq has reported on 23rd July, 2018.

23. Religious procession by Hindus (Ratha Yatra) was attacked by Islamists in Gopalganj District of Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dhaka Tribune has reported on 23rd July, 2018.

24. Former fuel advisor of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Editor (in-chief) of closed Bengali language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman has threatened to flay Hindus at court premises, popular Bengali-language online news portal of Bangladesh dhakatimes24.com has reported on 26th July, 2018.

25. Shangeetanandaji Maharaj, principal of Pranab Moth (Hindu monastery) in Dhaka, said Hindus are still being evicted from Bangladesh. Conference speakers urge to ensure safety for religious minorities during upcoming national polls of Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 27th July, 2018.

26. Dead body of a Hindu schoolgirl was recovered from a pond in Panchagarh District of northern Bangladesh. Victim’s elder sister told reporters that Muslim boy Anisur Rahman alias Anis used to stalk the victim frequently. Anis also threatened the victim of dire consequences if she did not agree with his proposal to have an affair, she added. 27. Harijan community (Dalit Hindus) of Bangladesh demands property ownership, job security, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 28th July, 2018.

28. Bangladesh Hindus are facing huge bureaucratic conspiracy. Though Vested Property Return (Amendment) Act was adopted in the parliament in 2001 and several positive amendments were done in between 2011 to 2013, but no land has been returned to any victim Hindu so far, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 28th July, 2018.

29. A jewellery shop of Hindu man has been looted in Joypurhat District of northern Bangladesh, popular bilingual online newsportal of Bangladesh banglanews24.com has reported on its Bengali website on 29th July, 2018.
