Plight of Hindus in Bangladesh – Report of Human Rights Violations in September’18

Hindus in Bangladesh are one of the most persecuted communities in the world. Muslims of Bangladesh often rebuke Hindus as Malaun. The word Malaun is derived from the Arabic “ملعون”, meaning ‘accursed’ or ‘deprived of God’s Mercy’, and in modern times, it is used as an ethnic slur by the Muslims in Bengal for Hindus. Political leaders from religious parties frequently abuse the Hindus as Malaun during the election rallies (Source: Wikipedia).

However, since January 2018, we have been tracking the various cases of Hindu human rights violations in Bangladesh –

We have followed different media reports to collate these crimes. Here is the report on human rights violations against Hindus of Bangladesh reported in the month of September’18:

1. Israeli author, columnist & senior media research analyst Rachel Avraham wrote a column on 2nd September, 2018 in Israel based online English-language news-portal jerusalemonline.com titled as “Israeli Druze Diplomat Mendi Safadi: Stop Ignoring Human Rights Abuses” where she emphasized on grave human rights violation in Bangladesh, which is resulting in Hindus & other religious minorities being ethnically cleansed from the country.

2. Miscreants attacked Hindus in Brahmanbaria district of east-central Bangladesh in response to protest of Hindus against harassment of Hindu girls by attackers, Dhaka-based online Bengali news-portal, eibela.com has reported on 2nd September, 2018.

3. Freedom fighter of Bangladesh liberation war-1971, Hindu elderly man Bajendra Lal Debnath & his family members have been living hand to mouth under worn-out hut in Chattogram District of south-eastern Bangladesh. He fought for Bangladesh during liberation war adopting pseudonym Captain Karim. Although Bangladesh liberation war heroes have been getting huge payoff, Bajendra Lal Debnath is getting very little in comparison to others, Dhaka-based online Bengali news-portal, eibela.com has reported on 2nd September, 2018.

4. Panic among Hindus at Hatibandha village under Phulpur sub- District in Mymensingh District of central Bangladesh as Hindu tailor Swapan Chandra Pal was mercilessly beaten up by union council member (Panchayat) Rashid Khan & his sons on the pretext of theft, Bengali-language daily newspaper of Bangladesh Dainik Dinkal has reported on 2nd September, 2018. Bengali-language daily newspaper of Bangladesh Dainik Inqilab confirmed that tyrants were Muslim & led by union council member (Panchayat). Both the newspapers said that victim Hindu tailor Swapan Chandra Pal was innocent quoting locals & a local political leader.

5. Minister for Road Transport & Bridges of Bangladesh as well as General Secretary of current governing party Bangladesh Awami League, Obaidul Quader,MP said he was worried that the Hindu community of Bangladesh might be targeted ahead of forthcoming 11th National Parliamentary Election of Bangladesh, popular bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh, bdnews24.com has reported in its English website on 2nd September, 2018.

6. Bangladeshi lawyer and human rights activist Sultana Kamal has demanded separate ministry for Bangladeshi minorities, Bengali- language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Prothom Alo has reported on 3rd September, 2018.

7. Ornaments of goddess Kali have been stolen from a temple in Faridpur district of south-central Bangladesh, Bengali-language daily newspaper of Bangladesh Dainik Naya Diganta has reported on 3rd September, 2018.

8. One of the two largest political party of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) spokesperson has said “Religious minority groups become the worst victims of repression when Awami League (current governing party of Bangladesh) comes to power. Even their religious festivities come under attacks by the Awami League men”, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 4th September, 2018.

9. Muslim terrorist Selim & his cohorts attacked Hindu families in Dhaka District of central Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Kaler Kantho has reported on 6th September, 2018.

10. Muslim land grabber has been trying to grab century-old home belonging to a Hindu family in Mymensingh divisional city of central Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 7th September, 2018.

11. Muslim land grabbers & their cohorts attacked a Hindu family to grab their land. Then grabbers vandalized idols of Hindu god- goddess, torched the temple of that family & hacked a Hindu youth to severe injured. The shocking incident happened in Nilphamari District of Northern Bangladesh, Bengali- language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Bhorer Kagoj has reported on 8th September, 2018.

12. Speakers urged Bangladesh government to ensure rights of the country’s religious minorities while they were addressing the opening session of the biennial national conference of Bangladesh Chhatra-Juba Oikya Parishad, the students and juvenile associate organisation of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, New Age has reported on 8th September, 2018.

13. Hindu rickshaw puller Apindra Das alias Lal Babu was killed by her wife Purnima Roy & her Muslim boyfriend Tota Miah in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, popular bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh bdnews24.com has updated in its Bengali website on 10th September, 2018.

14. Hindu cameraman Sumon Chakraborty of a Bangladeshi media was attacked by someone called Badal, son of Edon Miah & his men, bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh, pothiknews.com has reported in its Bengali website on 11th September, 2018.

15. Muslim man Israfil who is also brother of a police superintendent has threatened to kill, rape, grab land of a Hindu family in Narail District of south-western Bangladesh, Bengali-language daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Janata has reported on 11th September, 2018.

16. 3 idols of Hindu deities were broken, a Hindu man was injured in Faridpur District of south-central Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Samakal has reported on 11th September, 2018.

17. Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee (Committee for Resisting Killers and Collaborators of Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971) speakers want protection law for religious minorities of Bangladesh before forthcoming 11th National Parliamentary Election of Bangladesh, Bengali- language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Bhorer Kagoj has reported on 12 September, 2018.

18. Five idols of Hindu deities were found broken in Chattogram (formerly Chittagong) divisional city and financial centre of southeastern Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 12 September, 2018.

19. Municipality mayor Shahidul Islam Ratan’s men attacked Hindu leader Nikhil Kumar Saha in Pabna District of north-central Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 13 September, 2018.

20. Hindu crone Bela Rani Das was strangled to death in Gopalganj District of central Bangladesh, popular bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh, bdnews24.com has reported in its Bengali website on 15th September, 2018.

21. Hindu youths were beaten for not attending current governing party Bangladesh Awami League’s procession in Jhenaidah District of south-western Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Ittefaq has reported on 15th September, 2018.

22. “If Hindu candidates are given nomination for forthcoming 11th National Parliamentary Election of Bangladesh would be resisted”, Bangladesh Awami Olama League, a fundamentalist Islamic organization of Bangladesh that claims affiliation with the ruling Bangladesh Awami League has threatened, Bengali-language daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Inqilab has reported on 16 September, 2018.

23. Ornaments of goddess Kali have been stolen from a temple in Khulna divisional city of south-western Bangladesh, popular bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh bdnews24.com has reported in its Bengali website on 16th September, 2018.

24. Teachers are grabbers of land belonging to century old Hindu temple defying court’s order in Tangail District of central Bangladesh. Police is mute spectator. Then East Pakistan government had also attempted to acquire the property but they lost the legal battle that ensued, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 16 September, 2018.

25. Missing Hindu man found dead in Faridpur district of south-central Bangladesh, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 19 September, 2018.

26. First Hindu Chief Justice of Bangladesh Surendra Kumar Sinha (SK Sinha) has said in his recently published book “A Broken Dream: Rule of Law, Human Rights and Democracy” that he was exiled by government, popular bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh bdnews24.com has updated in its English website on 20th September, 2018.

27. Bangladesh Puja Udjapan (observance) Parishad (council) local president Pradyut Kumar Singh was attacked in Magura District of south-western Bangladesh, Dhaka-based online Bengali news-portal, eibela.com has reported on 21st September, 2018.

28. Bangladesh national section editor of American newspaper The New York Times, Tasmiah Nuhiya Ahmed wrote about “Violence against religious minorities (focusing Bangladesh) ” in English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, New Age on 21st September, 2018.

29. Hindu man Bishwajit Halder Nantu, a union council chairman (Panchayat chief) from Barishal District of south-central Bangladesh was shot dead. During the attack another Hindu man named Nihan Halder was also shot, English-language national daily tabloid newspaper of Bangladesh, Dhaka Tribune has reported on 22nd September, 2018.

30. Union council member (Panchayat), Muslim man Babul Hossain vandalised idols of Hindu deities, made for Durga Puja, at a Hindu temple in Tangail district of central Bangladesh. Locals caught him red-handed, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 23rd September, 2018.

31. Religious minority communities of Bangladesh are worried that violence against them may rise ahead of 11th National Parliamentary Election, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 24th September, 2018.

32. Politicians, economists, academicians, researchers, and former civil and army officers of Bangladesh expressed their views at the discussion titled ‘Communal Harmony, Peace and Conflict’ and organised by Bangladeshi English-language daily The Asian Age newspaper at a Dhaka hotel. During the discussion, Roving Editor of The Asian Age newspaper said the Pakistan army maltreated the people of Bangladesh with brazen communal behavior. He recalled how ruthlessly Pakistan army massacred people from the Hindus faith across Bangladesh, popular bilingual online news-portal of Bangladesh bdnews24.com has reported in its English website on 25th September, 2018.

33. Dalit Hindus formed a human chain in Gaibandha town of northern Bangladesh for demanding their rights, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 26th September, 2018.

34. Hindu girl was gang-raped by Muslim rapists in Habiganj District of north-eastern Bangladesh. Earlier the Muslim boy faked his name, pretended as Hindu boy & befriended with the Hindu girl, Bengali-language daily tabloid newspaper of Bangladesh, Manab Zamin has reported on 27th September, 2018.

35. Goddess Durga temple was attacked, idols were vandalized in Habiganj District of north-eastern Bangladesh, Dhaka-based online Bengali news-portal, eibela.com has reported on 28th September, 2018.

36. As 11th National Parliamentary Election  is approaching, Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council fears that the religious minority communities of Bangladesh might again become the easy target of communal attacks, General Secretary of the council, Advocate Rana Dasgupta talked to English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star about the issue & it was appeared in the newspaper on 28th September, 2018.

37. Religious minority groups of Bangladesh have called upon political parties not to give nomination to politicians involved in repressing minorities ahead of the 11th National Parliamentary Election, English-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, The Daily Star has reported on 28th September, 2018.

38. 8 idols of Hindu deities from 2 temples were vandalized in Manikganj District of central Bangladesh, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Ittefaq has reported on 30th September, 2018.

39. Theft happened in a Hindu temple under Satkhira District of south-western Bangladesh. Miscreants then set fire on dresses of deities, Bengali-language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Dainik Jugantor has reported on 30th September, 2018.

40. Girls High School headmaster cum local leader of one of the two largest political party of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Abdul Hannan has been arrested for distributing beef hotch-potch among Hindu students in Bogura District of northern Bangladesh, English-language national daily tabloid newspaper of Bangladesh, Dhaka Tribune has reported on 30th September, 2018. Such hate crime frequently happens in educational institutions of Bangladesh including prestigious Dhaka University & Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
