Social Media Questions Mamata’s Double Standards After Her Condemnation of Rajasthan Murder

Bengal CM expressed her sorrow at the brutal murder of a laborer from Bengal in Rajasthan and asked ‘how can people be so inhuman’.

To many, this would appear to be a natural and welcome gesture by a CM of a state expected to show empathy with her electorate. But to seasoned Mamata watchers and for those who go beyond mainstream media reporting of West Bengal, this was yet another case of Mamata’s double standards.

Here are 3 instances of gruesome murders and crimes within Bengal during TMC rule, that Mamata either callously ignored or dismissed as ‘sajano ghotana’ (fabricated incident).

Brutal Murder At Baduria

Nitai Das, s/o- Joydeb Das, was in a relationship with Saina Biswas, d/o- Habibur Biswas, village Shivpur, Chandipur, Baduria PS in district North 24 Parganas. Family of Saina were against the relationship. Nitai was threatened with deadly consequences by Habibur Biswas. On 25th August 2015, Saina escaped from her house with Nitai. They stayed at Nitai’s cousin’s house at Bangaon.

Next day, Saina returned to her family as they agreed to acknowledge their relationship. Nitai did not return to his house. Last time he had spoken to his mother over mobile on 27th August and since then, he went missing. Dead body of Nitai Das was found on 30th August in decomposed condition. His left eye had burst out and there were visible sign of extreme physical torture all over his body. Yet, in the post-mortem report, no sign of external injury was mentioned.

Kaushik Das, brother of Nitai Das, filed a complain but till date, no arrest has been made by police and efforts are on by political leaders and administration to portray this as a case of suicide.

Hindu Minor Girl Raped, Murdered, Thrown In Coal Pit

A minor girl, 15 year old Twinkle Shaw, was raped, murdered and her body found dumped in a coal pit in Jamuria, Asansol, Bardhaman district of West Bengal on 26 January, 2016. The accused Mohammed Aftab Alam was arrested by police after local people complained of police inaction.

When the Asansol MP, Babul Supriyo, tried to visit the family of the victim,  he was stopped by police and West Bengal administration on the grounds that his visit would stoke ‘communal tension’. Section 144 has been clamped in the area to prevent Hindus from even voicing their protest.

Hindu Man Marries Muslim Woman – Shot Dead by Islamic Group

Dipankar Roy (22) was brutally murdered on 3 December 2012 as he had married Salima (Muslim). The victim was riding his motorbike coming back from Chandpara to his own house, when he was lynched and shot dead by Muslim activists led by Aamir Mandal, a member of the local Islamist organization. Dipankar’s body was found in a pool of blood and bore multiple bullet wounds in the chest, abdomen and shoulders. The murder occurred in district North 24 Parganas, subdivision Bongaon, near the Bangladesh border.

But West Bengal police did not bother to arrest the murderers, due to intense pressure from the local Muslim religious bodies. Instead, the police tried to shield the perpetrators.

The nauseating and partisan act of the Mamata administration in West Bengal to appease Islamists became absolutely open on December 5th, 2012, when the relatives of Dipankar Roy went to RG Kar Hospital morgue. At first, Shri Malay Roy (cousin brother of the victim) and Shri Haridas (brother in law) remained unattended for several hours. Later, when they insisted for the dead body, local police under Tala police station informed them, off the record, that it is instructed from the higher position to delay the process so that no sentiment can be created amongst Hindus while returning to their home town.

To aid the Muslim activists, the West Bengal police, under pressure from the local Muslim clergy-mafia nexus, then barged into Dipankar’s house and intimidated / created mental pressure upon the family members of the victim to cremate his body in the dead of the night without post-mortem, to avoid any further investigation into this issue. Even a local MLA joined the police in pressurizing the family.

Mamata’s selective empathy

CM Mamta Banerjee has also accused rape victims of lying and claimed that such incidents are ‘cooked up’ by political opponents to defame her. She has shouted at protesting villagers to ‘shut up’ and alleged they were ‘plotting to kill her’.

In conclusion, Mamata couldn’t care less when the victim’s name is Nitai Das, Twinkle Shaw or Dipankar Roy, but her sorrow overflows and her faith in humanity is shaken when a Afrazul Khan dies. What are we to make of this?
