Supreme Court pulls up Maharashtra government in Palghar Sadhus lynching case

In a major setback for Maharashtra’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government the Supreme Court (SC) today asked the state government to provide SC the charge-sheet filed before the trial court stating that it wants to examine the final report.

As per the TOI report, the two-judge bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R Subhash Reddy asked the MVA government to apprise them regarding the inquiry status and the action initiated against errant police officials in the Palghar Mob lynching case.

In April this year, two Hindu sadhus of the Dasnami sect along with their driver were brutally murdered by a mob comprising mainly of left-leaning and missionary evangelicals while the police stood as mere bystanders.

Centre’s representative Solicitor General Tushar Mehta pointed out media reports according to which the charge-sheet was over ten thousand pages and said that it was for the court to decide where any police officer was a party to the crime or if disciplinary action needs to be taken against policemen for the negligence of duty.

The bench has given three weeks’ time to the Uddhav Thackeray led Maharashtra government to file its reply.
