Terrorist-Neta of Siwan, Mohd. Shahabuddin dies of Covid, Islamists mourn

The dangerous criminal, terrorist and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, Mohammad Shahabuddin died of Covid-19 while undergoing a life term for murder. Lodged in Tihar jail, he was found to be Covid positive on the 20th of April. He was immediately provided a Covid bed after the Delhi High Court directed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and prison authorities to ensure ‘proper medical supervision and care’ for the murderer.

Prison officials said Shahabuddin was admitted to the ICU three days before his end. This was happening when honest taxpayers were being denied Covid treatment in most Delhi hospitals for the lack of beds/ ventilators!

The eloquent writer and BJP baiter, Islamist Saba Naqvi remembered the terrorist as if he were her own brother and wrote, “The saheb of Siwan, one of the big DONS of Hindi belt states. felled by COVID.” She conveniently forgot to mention the fact that the guy was a convicted murderer. For all her rants on human rights, as long as one is from the minority community even plunder and murder can be forgotten and forgiven! Imagine the furore if a Hindu journalist had made a similar remark after the death of dreaded criminal Vikas Dubey?

Unlike what such characters would want us to believe, Shahabuddin was a terrorist who had the blood of several on his hands, including policemen. His diktat ran far and wide all over Bihar, during the lawless days of the Lalu Prasad Yadav run government since 1990 and lasted well into this century. He used his proximity to the Lalu family, his own membership in the RJD national executive committee, and his MP/ MLA position to full effect killing and maiming several opponents. It was this very immunity from legal action that propelled him to such notoriety.

In March of 2001, Shahabuddin slapped an officer who had gone to arrest him and his henchmen fired Pakistan-made AK-47 machine guns on the police party, killing two policemen. The criminal was running Sharia kangaroo courts, settling and meddling in family disputes to land arbitrations. He was a hardened criminal belonging to the Type A variety, ones that even courts mention as beyond reform. Incarcerated since 2005 in the Siwan jail of Bihar, from where he used to run his reign of terror, the Supreme Court intervened and transferred him to the more secure Tihar jail in Delhi in early 2017.

His brush with the law began in the 1990s and his specialty had always been attacks on high-ranking policemen. He used his clout with impunity and an attack on the Siwan Superintendent of police, SK Singhal in 1996 using firearms took 11 years to reach a conclusion. He was sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment in 2007. This after Singhal identified both Shahbuddin and two of his bodyguards named Jehangir Alam and Mohammed Khaliq.

He was currently undergoing a sentence for killing three sons of a Siwan businessman named Chanda Babu who refused to pay Shahabuddin extortion money. This double-murder epitomizes the cruelty of Shahabuddin. Girish Raj and Satish Raj sons of Chanda Babu were kidnapped and dipped in acid before they were executed in 2004 by the criminal and his henchmen.

A brother of the victims named Rajeev and an eyewitness to the murder who had escaped in 2004 was shot dead in 2014. Rajeev’s execution came just a couple of days before he was scheduled to testify in court. The one and only remaining son Nitish is differently-abled. That the parents of the victims could not attend the final court hearing due to security reasons makes one seriously doubt our legal system. Shahabuddin was not awarded the death sentence which compounded the misery and the desperate father said that he had faith in God.

His untimely death due to Covid should bring some form of poetic justice to the victims of his crimes, especially the ones that were never proven for lack of evidence. The body of Chote Lal, a rival local leader who was abducted by Shahabuddin is yet to be discovered, even after 22 years! The terrorist was sentenced to just two years in jail for that crime!

More than as an MP, Shahabuddin will be remembered as an outlaw who had more than three dozen cases ranging from murder, kidnapping, illegal profiteering to attempt to murder. His name will be etched in history as someone who was one of the prime enforcers of Lalu’s jungle raj. It was only the arrival of the JDU-BJP government from 2005 onwards that brought with it a fear of the law and development to this part of Bharat that has always been rich in mineral wealth, education and culture.
