Assam is witnessing a spate of murders of Hindu youths lately. After broad daylight murders of Sanatan Deka and Rituparna Pegu, a Hindu youth Saurav Das has reportedly been killed in Dibrugarh over an alleged love affair with a Muslim girl. The 20-year-old youth’s body was fished out from Sessa river after he was reportedly murdered and his body dumped by the girl’s family.
As per reports, Saurav Das who belonged to Dewanbari village, was in love with a girl from Muslim community and her family got whiff of the affair. Taking strong exception to the development, they sought to eliminate the Hindu youth. On 19th June 2020, they forced the girl to call Saurav to a particular spot and ambushed him there.
After stabbing him, they dumped his body in Sessa river, which was fished out by a team of State Disaster Response Force(SDRF). His motorcycle was also found by the river front.
Commenting on the incident, a local said “It is a pre-planned murder. We demand a proper investigation into the incident. We will not remain silent till the culprits get strict punishment”. On 20th June 2020, the agitated locals took control of Lezai highway to Dibrugarh and blocked the NH37 with burning tyres. Saurav’s kin demanded capital punishment for the accused. There were also reports of crowd trying to burn the house of an accused person’s brother. The police imposed section 144 to quell the unrest and later changed it to a curfew.
Dibrugarh district’s SP Sreejith T. told press that the situation improved after intervention of administration and a peace committee has been formed. The Dibrugarh district Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) demanded stringent punishment for the culprit and condemned the incident.
Assam is not the only state to see such a case of ‘honor killing’. On 24th June, just 5 days after Saurav’s murder, the same story was repeated In Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar. A youth was found hanging from a tree in Hashimpur and initially it was treated as suicide case but police investigation revealed it to be a case of murder.
It was found that Arun was in love with the sister of Firoz. When Firoz found out, he called in his friends Mohsin, Ali and Shahrukh and together they strangled Arun and hung his body on a tree to make it look like a suicide.
