After widespread outrage against using a famous Thyagaraja Kriti in a Telugu film in an objectionable manner, the film crew has apologized and agreed to remove the kirti. Recently, Ek Mini Katha, a Telugu adult comedy film directed by a debutant director Kartik Rapolu, was released on Amazon Prime. When the teaser was released many Carnatic music enthusiasts noticed that a famous kirti of Tyagaraja swami, Entho Muttho, was used for a very objectionable intimate scene.

The film itself is about “What happens when a child is told that his phallus is smaller than the average size” as per TOI review. In the kriti “Entha Muddo Entha Sogaso”, Thyagaraja sings about the indescribable beauty of Shri Rama and how people who are chained by worldly lust cannot see his true form. It is a very celebrated composition and the kriti has been used as it is without any changes in the film. The kriti was used to describe the beauty of the lead actress as against Shri Rama as sung by Thyagaraja swami in his original composition.

The Carnatic music fraternity took offence to this and condemned the film crew on social media and demanded that the kriti be removed. SM posts accused the film crew of lacking creativity to use the kriti and spoiling it’s sanctity. However after this was taken to the notice of the director, he agreed to replace the song and apologised to the Carnatic music fraternity.

Many pointed out that it’s not the first time Telugu cinema uses Thyagaraja kritis in objectionable manners. But in the past the lyrics were changed to suit the concept and the visuals were decent. In Ek Mini Katha, the film’s concept itself is vulgar and the visuals for which the kriti was used were outright sexual. Fortunately unlike in the past, vigilant Hindus’ criticism of this appropriation led to the director apologising and removing the kriti.
