Threatened with rape, murder, academic harassment: Hindu Girl Students at NIT, Srinagar

The full horror of what the outstation students at NIT Srinagar have undergone in the last 1 week is coming out only now. After the brutal assault by J&K police and unsympathetic attitude of college authorities to their plight created a furore on social media, the Union Government finally reacted and posted CRPF in the college and sent an MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) delegation to meet & assuage the students. Finally feeling secure, the students opened up to reveal the extent of the intimidation and persecution they have been facing for long in the institute. Watch this video below of the interaction where girl students can he heard talking about the kind of threats they face –

These are the key points made by the girl students:

  • We are facing academic threats from some professors. They are telling us we will fail you and give you only 1-2 marks. Can these people spoil our lives just like that? We have worked so hard to reach this place.
  • They are abusing us girls. When we report the abuses, authorities say we are spreading rumors.
  • We are being threatened that we will be made to complete the 4 year BE course in 6 years.
  • We are getting threats in person and on social media –
    • “Step outside the campus, and we will fix you”.
    • “We will make the campus into a shamshan (Hindu cremation ground)” (i.e all the outstation students will be killed)
  • Some girls were just walking, and some locals whispered a threat “Ek ka rape hoga to sari chup ho jaayengi” (if one of these outstation girls gets raped, all of them will shut up).
  • Whenever we Hindu students try to celebrate our festivals, we are made to run around for permission. Why?
  • We want only 1 thing- shift NIT out of Srinagar to a safer place.
  • The first rule of a lathi charge is that the lathi has to be hit below the waist – here students were hit on the head.
  • What was our mistake? Why are we being treated like criminals?
  • We have not come to NIT to play politics, we just want a peaceful environment to study.

This video sees the student’s presenting their demands –

  • Strict action against J&K Police officials who were present when we were lathi charged.
  • J&K Police DSP Sajad should retract his statement that we (students) pelted stones at police. Strict action should be taken against the DSP.
  • J&K police need to return the tricolor which they snatched & dishonored.
  • College administration who were involved in the attack against us should resign – we students will share the list of names with you (MHRD team) in written. They should not be allowed to spoil anyone’s career.
  • Our alumni (students who have passed out) have also faced this problem (of discrimination) – it is not new. We don’t want our juniors to suffer in the same fashion.
  • NIT needs to be shifted out of Srinagar right away.
  • We need to be evacuated from here asap.
  • Media is not being allowed inside. They should be allowed inside to report what we are experiencing. The statement by authorities that things are back to ‘normal’ is false- it needs to be retracted.
  • The Deputy CM (Nirmal Singh) repeated J&K police statement that they had resorted to a ‘mild’ lathi charge. A student is undergoing surgery to get a plate fitted in his leg, 4 of us got fractures, we suffered deep head wounds – can this be called a ‘mild’ lathi charge?
  • Who authorized the J&K police to enter the hostel rooms, beat up first year students who were not even involved in the protests? Even a physically handicapped student & girl students were lathi charged.

This tweet sums up the silence of our left-liberal media on this issue –

This episode in NIT Srinagar also raises serious questions on the nature of our democracy and how separatism in Kashmir has been allowed to fester for so long. HinduPost will attempt to address some of those questions in a subsequent article. But for now, we request everyone to listen to these brave students and raise awareness on this serious issue so that the Authorities are forced to consider their genuine demand – the safety of these students is non-negotiable. There has been a welcome initiative #ChaloNIT announced by some brave-heart citizens which we hope sees maximum participation from fellow citizens of Bharat –

Chalo NIT girl students
