Assam MLA arrested for saying “COVID19 used to target Muslims, those in quarantine could be killed”

Aminul Islam, the Dhing MLA from the Islamist All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) party has been arrested for making communal and false statements on the coronavirus epidemic and the treatment of Muslim patients, as per media reports.

In audio clips that have surfaced on social media, Islam reportedly said there was a conspiracy to target Muslims on the pretext of Covid-19 and those sent to quarantine could be killed. He also said a plan was underway to spread ‘hatred’ against people associated with Tablighi Jamaat (TJ), and that the condition of quarantine centres was worse than that of detention centres used to incarcerate foreigners illegally staying in the state.

The MLA has been booked under relevant Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections and arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy and spreading disaffection among communities, among others, Assam director general of police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said.

The police picked up Islam from his residence in Dhing in Nagaon district on Monday night and arrested him on Tuesday morning after interrogation.

There are 26 Covid-19 cases in Assam and 25 of them are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation at their illegally-built centre in Nizamuddin, New Delhi. According to health officials, of the total 4,067 cases in Bharat as of Monday evening, 1,445 (or about 35%) are linked to the congregation. At least 25,500 Jamaat members and people who came in contact with them have been quarantined across Bharat.

Multiple large gathering were held by TJ in New Delhi in the month of March, including one as late as 26th March. Over 1000 foreigners illegally attended the Islamic missionary group’s event in violation of their tourist visas. Many Jamaatis later dispersed to various parts of the country and have gone into hiding refusing to heed govt. requests to come forward for COVID19 screening and quarantine. Those who have been quarantined are harassing nurses and officials, spitting and even defecating to express their displeasure.

Assam government has launched a manhunt for around 300 members of TJ believed to be in the state, out of which 30 have gone into hiding. On Sunday, nine members of Jamaat from Maharashtra who were in Assam’s Darrang district and did not report to police were detained. The govt. had issued a final call to those who attended the TJ congregation to report to the nearest state-run health centre by 6 am on Tuesday or face culpable homicide (IPC 308) charges.

Aminul Islam is no stranger to expressing such Islamist & conspiratorial views. Recently during the ongoing anti-CAA-NRC protests, he had made the startling claim that Bengali Muslims and not the indigenous Ahom people were native to the state.

AIUDF is known as a party that brazenly supports illegal Bangladeshi Muslim immigration into Assam. Before the Assam assembly elections of 2016, AIDUF chief  Badruddin Ajmal (respectfully called ‘perfume baron’ by Delhi media houses) had issued an appeal to Muslims in Assam to “unite against Hindus”. In November 2017, AIUDF MLA Sheikh Shah Alom made a blood-curdling threat that the day when ‘Muslims would attack Hindus’ is fast approaching.
