BJP worker Swapan Mondal dies in judicial custody

BJP worker Swapan Mondal has died in judicial custody. A popular grass-roots worker from South 24 Parganas district, he was arrested on 3 April, just after the 2nd phase of polling, on what BJP workers allege were false charges.

He was produced in court on 4 April, after which he was remanded to judicial custody. He died on 9 May of what police claim was a ‘massive heart attack’. But locals allege foul play and are demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death.

We spoke to Shri Devdutta Maji, President of social organisation Singha Bahini, and a BJP candidate from Chowringhee assmebly constituency. He told us that the deceased Swapan Mondal was a good worker who was arrested on flimsy charges by WB Police at Mamata Banerjee’s bidding to hamper BJP’s voter mobilisation.

It must be noted that this custodial death comes in the middle of a brutal state-wide pogrom against Hindu supporters of BJP, in which atleast 18 BJP workers have died, hundreds of women have been raped and molested and tens of thousands have been rendered homeless, with around 1800 forced to flee to neighboring states of Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand. Astonishingly, the Calcutta HC has said it is ‘satisfied’ with the state government’s handling of post-poll violence and has rejected the Centre’s demand to set up a special investigation team to probe the same!

Shri Maji is visiting areas affected by the violence to provide relief through his organisation Singha Bahini. Those wishing to contribute may donate to the organisation’s account.

Devdutta Maji also told how Hindus in Bengal are now being intimidated by the Islamists who have been emboldened manifold after Mamata’s victory. As an example he told us that one Akul Industries Pvt Ltd., a manufacturer of sanitary napkins and tissue paper, is now firing all Hindu staff and hiring Muslim staff instead due to such pressure. The company is head-quartered in Patna, Bihar and is owned by a Hindu, but has been threatened to take this step if it wants to operate in WB.

In another case, a BJP supporter’s Kirana (grocery) shop was ransacked and the e-rickshaw (Toto) he owned was damaged by TMC goons. Now, that man is being told to cough up INR 50K if he wants to operate the e-rickshaw again.

Many such incidents of BJP supporters being fired from their jobs, being denied rations by govt. PDS shops, being asked to cough up ‘protection money’, which is nothing but a form of jaziya (protection tax collected from non-Muslims in an Islamic state), are coming to light, he added.
