Andhra’s “Dalit” Home Minister Mekathoti Sucharita is a Christian

A legal rights body has written to President Ram Nath Kovind against the Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Mekathoti Sucharita who apparently mis-represented herself as a Scheduled Caste Hindu to contest elections from the SC Reserved Constituency (Prathipadu – Guntur District), even though she has converted to Christianity.

In their complaint to the President, LRPF (Legal Rights Protection Forum) has provided the link to an interview on a Telugu YouTube news channel iDream News where Mekathoti Sucharita admitted the fact that she is a Christian and practices Christian religion. Watch the video uploaded on 9 September, 2019 from 1:27:50 onwards:

Mekathoti Sucharitha is an MLA of the ruling YSCR party. Heralded with much fanfare last year as a ‘Dalit’ woman Home Minister of AP, this Indian Express profile tells about the background of the staunch YSR and family loyalist –

“She was inducted into the Congress by the late Dr Y S Rajashekara Reddy (YSR) after he spotted her during his historic ‘padayatra’ in 2003. Now, his son and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy appointed Mekathoti Sucharita, a Dalit woman, as the state home minister.

In 2009, YSR allotted her the party ticket for Prathipadu Assembly Constituency in Guntur district from where she won comfortably. After YSR’s death in September 2009, she swore allegiance to Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and resigned from Congress when Jagan launched YSRCP in March 2011. She again won from the seat on a YSRCP ticket in the bye-elections held in May 2012.

Sucharita used to regularly accompany Jagan’s mother Y S Vijayamma during the 2014 assembly election campaigning. In fact, Sucharita was a constant companion of Vijayamma until she withdrew from public life after 2014.

Calling it an honour to be given the home portfolio, Sucharita said, “YSRCP has got a huge mandate and it puts a lot of responsibility on us. Jagan’s commitment for the welfare of the people can be understood from the huge representation that backward communities got in the Cabinet. As a Dalit woman, it is a privilege to be made Home Minister.”

Sucharitha, who hails from Phirangipuram in Guntur, is married to IRS officer M Dayasagar who is now posted as Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) in Mumbai. Her father N Anka Rao was a medical doctor at a government hospital. He later ran a clinic in Phirangipuram. She completed her BA in Political Science in 1990.”

It is a travesty that the reservation system introduced after Independence for upliftment of backward Hindus, tribals and other Dharmics is being abused with such impunity in the country today. In January, LRPF had written to the SC and BC National Commissions asking for an official fact-finding mission to probe the issue of crypto-Christians, i.e. Scheduled Caste and other Hindus who convert to Christianity but officially maintain their SC / Hindu status to avail of reservation and other benefits.

Another crypto who revealed her true identity on the day of her retirement was ex-Supreme Court Justice R Banumathi from Tamil Nadu who declared, “Though I am a Hindu, I believe in the gospel of Jesus.”

YSRCP MP Raghu Ramakrishna Raju had recently admitted on live TV that, “Although officially Christians in the Telugu speaking states are reported as around 2.5%, in reality Christians are 25% of the total population.”  Christian missionaries were indulging in large-scale conversions using foreign money power, the MP stated. The shocking revelation fizzled out in just a few days with most of the national media outlets and political parties ignoring it.

The current Andhra CM Jegan Reddy is a practising Christian with a Hindu-sounding name. His father YSR Reddy was the one who really institutionalised mass conversions in the state immediately after coming to power as CM of undivided Andhra in 2004 – in this mission, he had the blessings of the Sonia Gandhi-led UPA at the centre. Read this piece to understand how conversion is a family business for YSR Reddy’s clan.

One the one hand, a globally dominant religion like Christianity is being allowed to proselytize & decimate native religions and cultures using its war chest of foreign funds & time-tested strategies of divide & conquer, while on the other hand converts are misusing constitutional provisions designed to uplift poor, backward communities reduced to penury during brutal colonial rule by followers of the same global religion.
