“Go and settle matters with Jahangir”: WB Police to wife of arrested and custodially tortured BJP worker

Yet another shocking and painful episode from the ongoing state-sponsored pogrom against Hindu workers and supporters of BJP has come to light from West Bengal.

BJP candidate and social worker Devdutta Maji has been visiting the violence-hit families of BJP workers. He had one such interaction with Manju Pramanik, wife of BJP mandal president Sukanta Pramanik. The family, who belong to an OBC Hindu community, resides in Falta police station area, South 24 Parganas district.

A teary-eyed Manju narrated how her husband was arrested by police in the middle of the night, beaten and tortured in custody, with police asking her to meet with a notorious Muslim goon linked to the ruling TMC to ‘settle’ the matter.

The transcript of their short interaction is as below:

Devdutta: “What is your name, where do you stay?”

Manju: “Manju Pramanick, I live in Saipur under Falta police station, South 24 Parganas.”

Devdutta: “So what happened?”

Manju: “My husband Sukanta Pramanick is a BJP worker. A Muslim mob under Jahangir Khan started attacking Hindu houses and shops. My husband was arrested by the police for raising his voice against the attacks.”

Devdutta: “Where is your husband now?”

Manju: “My husband is in police custody”.

Devdutta: “When was he arrested?”

Manju: “The night before cyclone Yaas hit. He was taken out of the house at 2 a.m.”

Devdutta: “Did you go to meet your husband at the police station?”

Manju: “Yes I did meet him. The policemen asked me to settle matters with TMC leader Jahangir Khan.”

Devdutta: “Who said this?”

Manju: “This was said by the policemen at Falta PS – Sumon Bogi, Rafiqur Zaman and Avijit Hait.”

Devdutta: “Did the policemen behave well with your husband?”

Manju: “The policemen torture him so much. They even beat him badly in front of me and Jahangir Khan’s men”

Devdutta: “What do you want now?”

Manju: “I request PM Narendra Modi and our CM to release my husband as soon as possible.”

How the policemen wanted Manju Pramanik to ‘settle’ the matter with TMC goon Jahangir Khan, can be inferred from the plight of other Hindus struggling to return to their homes. The message is clear – either the family has to pay up to get Sukanta released, or the wife has to sexually submit to Khan.

Jahangir Khan is a notorious TMC goon in the densely populated Falta area, a den of illegal immigration and also known for crude bomb-making. He is allegedly a key member of the feared Yuva Trinamool, which is under direct control of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek. A viral video had shown Jahangir was close not only to Abhishek, but also Mamata who wanted Jahangir to ‘operate’ in Canning too along with Falta. Jahangir has a court order on a murder charge against him, yet roams free.

Thousands of cases like the Pramanik’s are cropping up all over Bengal today, but this pervasive, state-sanctioned violence has been completely censored by mainstream media and even news agencies like ANI, IANS etc. Courts are busy unnecessarily intervening in every little executive matter related to the Covid crisis, but have no time for this massive communal violence unfolding before our eyes.

Kolkata HC has said it is ‘satisfied’ with the superficial steps taken by the Mamata Banerjee regime – 3 men have been arrested for the murder of 2 BJP workers. However, over 20 BJP workers and their family members have been lynched to death since election results were announced on 2 May, but most of these have been dismissed as ‘suicide or personal vendetta’ by police. Ground workers have reported dozens of gang-rapes, but since police is refusing to file FIRs and TMC goons are threatening the victims, hardly any FIR has been filed. Anywhere from 40K to 1 lakh people have been displaced. Both NCW and NHRC teams have visited the state and NCW chief confirmed the terror-stricken state of women and entire families.

Some of those displaced have even sought refuge in neighbouring states like Assam and Odisha. TMC goons are extorting money or demanding sexual favors in order to let them return to their homes. An ex-governor of the country just tweeted a few hours back that he has received a complaint that ‘a few thousand BJP workers have been driven out by TMC goons and will probably have to pay hefty sums of money to be allowed to return.’ The current Governor of WB Jagdeep Dhankar has broken down during his visit to violence-afflicted areas and termed the current state in WB as ‘Demonocracy’.

But when a petition in SC requested immediate relief and rehabilitation for displaced people, the Supreme Court  denied the same stating “it can’t act ex-parte and has to first hear both parties (state and central governments)”. The WB violence matter will be heard next in SC on 7 June.
