“Hua to Hua” – Sam Pitroda’s dismissive comment on 1984 Sikh pogrom encapsulates Congress philosophy

Recently, the veteran Nehru-Gandhi family loyalist and Congress insider Sam Pitroda was caught making an extremely callous comment when questioned about his party’s instigation of theĀ  1984 Sikh pogrom.

Responding to a question by a TV reporter whether instructions for the pogrom were coming directly from PM Rajiv Gandhi’s office, a visibly agitated Pitroda said ā€œ84 me jo hua so huaā€ (whatever happened in ’84 happened) and demanded that BJP should explain its performance in the past five years.

Pitroda rebuked the media as well for repeating such “lies”.

Senior advocate and ex-AAP leader HS Phoolka, who has been spearheading the fight for justice to victims of the 1984 pogrom, had claimed that it was directly Rajiv Gandhiā€™s office that was giving the instructions to kill the Sikhs in Delhi. He also added that the Army was not called on the instructions of Prime Ministerā€™s Office.

Several eyewitnesses to the anti-Sikh pogrom in Delhi have testified that the murderous mobs were shouting slogans like ā€˜Khoon Ka Badla Koon Se Lange, Rajiv Gandhi Jindabad.ā€™ (we will avenge blood with blood, long live Rajiv Gandhi). It has been reported that these incendiary slogans were shown on television by national broadcaster Doordarshan continuously round-the-clock.

After Rajiv Gandhi became PM following his mother’s assassination, in his first address to the nation at a rally held near India Gate, New Delhi, he appeared to justify the brutal anti-Sikh pogrom that had just taken place in Delhi and other parts of the country.

Rajiv Gandhi said, “We must remember Indiraji. We must remember why her assassination happened. We must remember who could be the people behind this. When Indira’s assassination happened, there were riots in the country. We know that the hearts of the Indian people were full of anger and that for a few days people felt India was shaking. When a big tree falls, the earth shakes.”

In December last year, the Delhi High Court sentenced Congress veteran Sajjan Kumar to life in the first conviction of a politician in the deadly anti-Sikh pogrom of 1984, holding it was perpetrated by those with “political patronage.”

However, other senior Congress leaders like Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath, Jagdish Tytler, HKL Bhagat (now dead) have thus far escaped prosecution for their alleged hand in the pogrom.

“Hua to Hua…deal with it” – Congress’ derisive message to nation

The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and their durbaris consider the family to be India’s royalty. This coterie, also knowns as Lutyens’ Delhi, wants the nation to believe that the ‘first family’ has a divinely-ordained right to rule the country.

For the first 40 years after independence, the dynasty held sway over the country – doing as they pleased, and running roughshod over all institutions like judiciary, bureaucracy, educational institutions etc. The “Indira is India, India is Indira” rhetoric spread by sycophants went so much to Indira Gandhi’s head that she declared a brutal Emergency in 1975 and for two years the country reeled under the fascist fist of Indira and her drunk-with-power loutish son Sanjay.

A non-Congress Government came to power after Indira was forced to lift the Emergency, but short public memory and the vice-like grip Congress continued to exercise on the Establishment and opinion-makers ensured Congress & Indira stormed back to power in 1980.

The first serious challenge to Congress hegemony after this came due to the Bofors scandal – in which no small part was played by Rajiv’s Italian wife Sonia and her friends like Ottavio Quattorochi. After Rajiv’s assassination, it appeared that Congress would finally move on from the dynasty and become a meritocratic national party that the country deserves, but the hope was short-lived.

PV Narasimha Rao was sidelined and the next party President Sitaram Kesri was ruthlessly replaced with Sonia Gandhi in a dramatic coup which saw the 79-year-old Kesri allegedly locked in a bathroom in the party office for hours.

The Roman Catholic Sonia Gandhi shed whatever facade of civilizational consciousness Congress had managed to retain, and went after the Hindu majority with a vengeance during the UPA era. She surrounded herself with shady operators like Ahmad Patel, Oscar Fernandes, and promoted incompetent or rapacious politicians like Sushilkumar Shinde, P Chidambaram and Pratibha Patil. But her most telling blow to the nation was the blatantly anti-Hindu & destructive laws like 93rd amendment, RTE, Communal Violence Bill she passed or proposed, and the culture of divisive minoritarianism (minorityism) that she seeded deep into the country’s socio-political fabric.

It is only in the last decade, with the advent of social media, that the Congress ecosystem’s hold over public discourse and national discourse has been truly challenged. But even today, the Congress response to all their sins remains “Hua to Hua.”

Congress believes it has God-given right to go as far back to throw as much mud as they want on their opponents – whether it is raking up the Gandhi murder, Savarkar’s mercy petition to his British jailers, 1992 Babri Masjid, 1999 Kandahar hijacking, 2002 Godhra – but if anyone raises the dynasty’s chequered past or is critical of their governance record, then all hell breaks loose.

The arrogant Congress mindset has not yet realized that people today will not fall back to Congress as the default option, just because Congress and its acolytes want the public to believe that “hamam mein sab nange hain” (all parties are equally nude in the public bath). People can see the relative, qualitative difference between Congress and non-Congress Governments, and will vote accordingly.
