Enraged by FB comment, Samajwadi Party MLA in UP Gets Entire Family Arrested

The main allegation hurled at Hindus during the fake ‘Rising Intolerance‘ narrative peddled by mainstream media and Adarsh Liberals last year was that Modi’s ascent to the PM post had emboldened bigoted Hindus who were trampling all over the so-called religious minorities.

Before Lok Sabha elections 2014, each and every controversy involving Gujarat was highlighted without fail in media, and the buck stopped with Modi (then CM of Gujarat) – he was put squarely in the dock for anything and everything. For eg. this piece from 2013 makes Modi answerable for children from Rajasthan alleged to be working in cotton factories of Gujarat (for some reason, the Congress CM of Rajasthan escapes all questioning). Such razor sharp questioning of elected representatives is exactly what one expects from the media, and one thought that the advent of the Modi era would see all CMs across the nation being grilled with the same intensity to explain crime under their watch, growth figures, human indicators, policy decisions etc.

But these hopes have now been well and truly dashed. If there is one state which deserves to have a separate section in every prime time news slot, it is UP (Uttar Pradesh). UP is arguably the most mis-governed and lawless state in the country right now; West Bengal and Bihar being other close contenders. But if one were to follow just our national mainstream media (national news TV and English newspapers), one would fail to understand the gravity of the situation in UP. Two things stand out about UP today which no one in national media has highlighted –

  • If there is one state where intolerance has truly risen in the last few years, it is UP.
  • If there is one Government which has unleashed bigotry of its ‘supporters’ on the ordinary citizen, it is the Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party of UP.

If our media were truly concerned about social justice, communal harmony, rule of law and the other ideals it professes to defend, Akhilesh Yadav would be getting called out on a daily basis for his multiple failures on all fronts.

In the latest show of brute force by the Samajwadi Party, a senior SP MLA from Thakurdwara (Moradabad district) Nawab Jan Khan got so enraged by disparaging remarks on Facebook made against him by one of his constituents Aftab working in Saudi Arabia, that the MLA actually made the police arrest Aftab’s two brothers till the time the youth deleted the offending comment and offered a grovelling public apology on Facebook.

People being arrested for objectionable FB comments is, unfortunately, not new. There are three recent cases where overzealous supporters got people arrested for objectionable FB comments against their idolized leaders – Vedanta Gupta from UP was arrested for criticizing Akhilesh and his party (SP) saying ‘It is a party of Muslims‘; Ravi Prakash Chaurasiya was arrested in MP for abusing PM Modi on Facebook;  Rajeev Rajoriya from MP was arrested for posting abusive FB comments against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

But family members being arrested in lieu of the person who made the objectionable comments is unheard of, and shows the way UP police is literally putty in the hands of drunk-with-power Samajwadi Party leaders and their band of extended ‘supporters’. Go to UP today, and every man/woman on the street will tell you how lawlessness has crossed all limits in UP today. But for mainstream media, the father-son duo of Akhilesh-Mulayam are beyond questioning- after all, they are ‘secular’ stalwarts or know how to grease the well-oiled media machinery.
